The Open Day at CERN – My first encounter with particle physics

17 April 2008 Being the new CERN/LHC Communicator for Germany but not having a degree in physics (I worked at the press office of the Centre for European Economic Research in Mannheim, Germany, for the past ten years), the CERN Open Day was an excellent opportunity to learn more about particle physics and "the world's largest particle physics laboratory" that I wouldn't have wanted to miss. The crowds were massive, but with the help of a press badge I managed to see a good variety of events and places. Category: Feature | Tagged: , , ,

From SLAC Today: symmetry Magazine launches new online format

3 April 2008 The latest issue of symmetry launches the next phase of the magazine's development. Our readers now use the magazine in different ways, and we are reaching a much larger audience. While readers are outspoken in wanting to keep the print magazine, many of them are now more comfortable reading online. Category: Around the World | Tagged: ,

Sad news for the ILC community

27 March 2008 Vincent Lepeltier, our good colleague and friend, suddenly passed away last week, a few days after the Sendai meeting, leaving us full of pain and sadness. We will miss very deeply both his professional and human qualities.

SiD detector concept meeting at SLAC

6 March 2008 After the news about budget reductions, especially for ILC activities, in December last year in the UK and US, there was considerable discussion within SiD whether to have this meeting or not. In the end we decided to proceed as planned because the call for LOIs still exists and SiD wants to prepare an LOI. Category: Around the World | Tagged: , , , , , ,

From Fermilab Today: SCRF meeting establishes compatibility framework

1 May 2008 Scientists from around the world work to develop components for future linear accelerators that use superconducting radiofrequency cavities. Research efforts should allow for a more efficient and cost-effective approach to furthering this technology. Category: Feature | Tagged: , ,

Together as one: ILD community meets in Zeuthen

7 February 2008 A global project like the ILC depends on global cooperation. The contributors are scattered all over the world. Researchers cannot simply walk down the hall to get advice from a colleague because he is likely to sit somewhere half a world away. However, there is technology that helps scientists to cover these distances virtually: discussions in internet forums and regular telephone and video conferences are part of any scientist’s everyday life. From Fermilab Today: ILC Citizens’ Task Force forges ahead

31 January 2008 With funding for ILC R&D cut this year, and the possible start of construction postponed, the ILC Citizens' Task Force could have turned their backs on the proposed project. They didn't. Category: Feature | Tagged: , ,

SiLC R&D collaboration in Turin

31 January 2008 The sixth meeting of the Silicon tracking for the Linear Collider R&D Collaboration (SiLC) took place at the University degli Studi in Turin from 18 to 20 December 2007. The three-day meeting was attended by about 50 people and covered all the main topics of interest for this R&D. Category: Around the World | Tagged: , ,

Live from ALCPG

25 October 2007 A hotel built around a New Orleans street, burgers for lunch, autumn colours, bison and a duelling piano - this must be ALCPG! More than 300 machine and detector people and theorists have been debating and planning the ILC's entry into the Engineering Design Phase this week and are now looking forward to the R&D tours this afternoon and the conference dinner tonight. DOE Under Secretary for Science Raymond L. Orbach addressed the community on Monday. A lively 'duelling scientists' session on Tuesday circled around questions on the project's future. The vertex detector review is still going on, and the new Research Director will officially take up office on Friday, so stay tuned for more news next week. In the meantime have a look at some impressions of the week so far. Category: Feature, Slideshow | Tagged: ,

From SLAC Today: Groovy Project Solving Cloudy Problem

20 September 2007 Experiments in the PEP-II accelerator have shown that beam pipes with grooves can snare unwelcome electrons, greatly reducing the formation of electron clouds that can disturb the beam. Category: Feature | Tagged:
