Mapping the ILC

| 19 January 2012 Map implementation: Jeffrey Clark (GDE) The ‘international’ in ‘International Linear Collider’ isn’t just a part of a name. The ILC is demonstrably global, involving thousands of scientists from the Americas, Asia and Europe in accelerator activity, detector research and physics pursuits. The map is a picture of ILC activity around the world. Visit the map webpage and click around. And if you notice any inaccuracies or see that an institution is missing, please don’t hesitate to notify us. We can make corrections. Enjoy exploring the world of the ILC! Breaking ground for IARC

12 January 2012 Just before the holiday, members of the US and Illinois governments gathered for a groundbreaking ceremony to officially begin construction on the future Illinois Accelerator Research Center, or IARC. From left to right: Bob Kephart, IARC project director; Jim Siegrist, associate director of the Office of Science for the DOE Office of High Energy Physics; Michael Weis, DOE Fermilab site manager for the Office of Science; William Brinkman, director of the Office of Science for the DOE; Pier Oddone, Fermilab director; Warren Ribley, director of the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity; Linda Holmes, Illinois state senator; and Michael Fortner, Illinois state representative. Quiltwork event

5 January 2012 Photograph: Cindy Arnold Happy New Year! Perhaps this year will bring a discovery resembling the event being depicted on this bright, bursting-with-energy quilt. Artist Susan Jackan fused and machine-embroidered this quilted depiction of a Higgs event, titled The Heart of the Matter. Stitched and fabric art works of scientific scenes, phenomena and ideas are currently on display in the exhibit Stitched Together: Art and Science at the Fermilab Art Gallery. Atwitter over Higgs

15 December 2011 The twitter chatter over CERN's Higgs news on Tuesday was nonstop, enough to prompt New Scientist to remind us, in a tweet about the Durban conference, "it's not ALL about the #Higgs you know". Category: Image of the week | Tagged:

Japanese delegation explores European labs

8 December 2011 A delegation from the prefectures Fukuoka and Saga on the Japanese island Kyushu visited two European labs, CERN and DESY, last week to learn about existing research infrastructures and the labs' experiences with management, administration, local communication and a whole lot more. The region is one of two possible Japanese sites for the ILC, and the delegation, consisting of four members of the Fukuoka/Saga ILC planning committee, wanted to establish a dialogue with the European labs to exchange ideas and information. At DESY, they heard about DESY regional cooperation, socioeconomic impacts, innovation and technology transfer, outreach with local communities and of course DESY and the ILC. They also visited some facilities on campus, including the new accelerator module test hall for the European X-Ray Free-Electron laser XFEL, pictured here. Illinois Accelerator Research Center

23 November 2011 The Illinois Accelerator Research Center, or IARC, will provide a state-of-the-art facility for accelerator research, education and industrialisation. Located on the Fermilab campus, near Chicago in the US, the new building will house 42,000 square feet of offices, technical and educational space for scientists and engineers from Fermilab, Argonne, local universities and industrial partners. Injector cryomodule for the Quantum Beam experiment

17 November 2011 At the Superconducting Test Facility (STF) at KEK, Japan, the construction of the injector cryomodule equipped with two ILC-type nine-cell cavities has begun for the Quantum Beam experiment. The cavity string has been brought out of the clean room, ready for tuner installation. The gas return pipe is being readied to be placed in the cold-mass assembly framework. Electrons dance in Paris

10 November 2011 Last month, a true tabletop electron accelerator was shown to the public for the first time during the CNRS exhibition Entrée en matière in Trocadéro's gardens in Paris, France. This model was built to serve as a general introduction to the understanding of the principles underlying accelerator operations in general and more specifically colliders. The public can actually see and manipulate the controls and therefore easily grasp what is happening. The model is a small replica of the Orsay storage ring (Anneau de Collision d’Orsay, ACO) at LAL. ACO was in service as a collider from 1965 to 1980 with an energy of 500 MeV for each beam. The real accelerator is now a museum, listed on the French heritage register. Learn more (in French) about the model called "Electrons' dance". Category: Image of the week | Tagged: , ,

A new lodger at HERA

20 October 2011 The optical inspection system OBACHT at DESY moved to a new lab roughly 25 metres below the surface in one of the former experimental halls of the HERA accelerator. Becoming good neighbours - OBACHT and HERA! Category: Image of the week | Tagged: , ,
