Global Design Efficiency – the story of a group revolution

| 21 February 2013 It all started in 2004... or so. LC NewsLine recaps the important milestones in the Global Design Effort history, and present and former honourable witnesses remember and send wishes to Barry Barish and Sake Yamada. Category: Feature | Tagged: , , , ,

Press Release: International Linear Collider completes draft of its design report

20 December 2012 Tokyo, 15 December. The draft of the Technical Design Report (TDR) for the planned International Linear Collider ILC was handed over to Jonathan Bagger, the chair of the International Linear Collider Steering Committee (ILCSC), at an official ceremony in Tokyo, Japan, on 15 December. This draft is the product of many years of research and development and a series of in-depth technical reviews for the ILC, the potential next-generation particle collider to complement and advance beyond the physics of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. The handing over of the TDR draft marks the ILC's major step towards the completion of its final design. Category: Feature | Tagged: , , ,

Exciting time for the ILC technical design

| 20 December 2012 After the official handover ceremony of the TDR draft in Tokyo last Saturday, ILC experts, policy makers and members of industry discussed the potential of building the ILC in Japan. One conclusion was that physicists from all over the world would be welcome in Japan, even though they may be considered strange by some. Category: Around the World | Tagged: , , ,

Major goal achieved for high-gradient ILC SCRF cavities

| 21 November 2012 One of the most important goals of the Global Design Effort has been to demonstrate that high-gradient cavities can be reliably produced in industry. We established two gradient goals: to produce cavities qualified at 35 Megavolts per metre (MV/m) in vertical tests and to demonstrate that an average gradient of 31.5 MV/m is achievable for ILC cryomodules. Furthermore, we set a goal of producing these high-gradient cavities in industry with 50% yield by 2010 and 90% yield by the end of 2012. We have recently achieved these ambitious goals! Organising the post-2012 era

| 28 June 2012 The new Linear Collider Organisation is being planned with a united ILC and CLIC physics and detector effort. This is a natural step, but the devil is in the details. While there has been a lot of fruitful collaboration in the past, there also remain differences that must be considered. Category: Research Director's Report | Tagged: , , , , ,

After the TDR: what’s next for ILC?

| 28 June 2012 New machines set new challenges for accelerator experts, and there are a number of challenges that the ILC R&D team has had to face before sitting down to write a convincing Technical Design Report. Beam test facilities in all regions have delivered and are still delivering important results. Project Manager Marc Ross takes stock. Category: Director's Corner | Tagged: , , ,

Some highlights from the KILC12 workshop

| 7 June 2012 The international KILC12 workshop was held in April in Korea to discuss topics varying from ILC physics to the nuts and bolts of the accelerator and detector designs for the International Linear Collider. This meeting came at a crucial time when the design decisions for the Technical Design Report was being finalised and the writing of the report being begun in earnest. The cost estimate for the ILC’s Technical Design Report

| 31 May 2012 The cost estimate for the ILC that will accompany the Technical Design Report is intended to be a credible, comprehensive, and well-documented presentation of the costs in a format which is useful for all regional partners. It will be a “Value” estimate, stated in “ILC Units” which are convertible to any regional currency, and in person-hours of institutional labour at the ILC laboratory, or at collaborating laboratories and institutions. FALC meets in Japan

| 24 May 2012 The Funding Agencies for Large Colliders met in the Shonan Village Center in Kanagawa, Japan on 17 April. FALC is an informal group of agency representatives who discuss large international projects in particle physics, both projects that are under way and those in the planning stages. FALC has given special attention to the ILC since it is a totally global initiative and has no home laboratory to oversee its development. The meeting in Japan discussed the future of ILC R&D beyond the Global Design Effort mandate to produce a Technical Design Report next year. Category: Director's Corner | Tagged: , , , , , , ,

KILC12 in Daegu: a preview

| 5 April 2012 The joint ACFA Physics/Detector Workshop and Global Design Effort meeting on linear colliders (KILC12) will be held in Daegu, Korea from 23 to 27 April 2012. This meeting comes at the crucial time when we are making the transition from determining the technical details for the Technical Design Report to actually writing the report. At Daegu, the GDE will not only present a set of progress reports on ILC R&D but will also schedule special working meetings on costing and first draft sections of the TDR.
