Barry Barish | 22 March 2012The Global Design Effort Executive Committee met face to face in Washington, DC, last month. One of the main goals was to agree on the detailed plan towards completing the Technical Design Report, including decisions about the level of detail that will be included in the actual report and how to ensure that the backup documentation will be readily available.

Barry Barish | 1 March 2012During a face-to-face working meeting of the Global Design Effort Executive Committee, held in Washington DC last month, invited guests discussed with us how science is supported in the US system, including new project approval, the yearly budget process and the formulation of science policy.

Barry Barish | 9 February 2012On 19 and 20 January 2012, the third Baseline Technical Review to finalise the Technical Design Report baseline was held at KEK laboratory in Japan. The meeting reviewed the proposed cavity gradient performance, cavity integration, and the main linac integration and interfaces to the ILC conventional facilities, including radiofrequency power, control and interfaces to conventional facilities. A special meeting on superconducting radiofrequency costs followed this meeting on 21 January.

Barry Barish | 5 January 2012A major accomplishment last year was the evaluation and approval of a new ILC baseline that has been more optimised for cost, performance and risk. We are now completing the design details and embarking on producing the ILC Technical Design Report by the end of this year.

Barry Barish | 1 December 2011In just over one year we plan to produce the final Global Design Effort deliverable, a Technical Design Report for the ILC. We have made a set of important improvements in the design over the past year that will result in an ILC design that is more optimised for cost, performance and risk, and have recently hammered out a large number of smaller technical decisions at the Baseline Technical Review at DESY.

Leah Hesla | 20 October 2011Until the Large Hadron Collider tells scientists where in the energy frontier to dig for new physics, ILC researchers are preparing for eventualities. Should new physics be found to reside in a range higher than the ILC’s current reach, scientists have a energy-boosting plan in their back pocket.
