More than two hundred scientists and engineers travelled around the globe this past week to attend the 2007 Beijing ILC Workshop at IHEP. The meeting kicked off with GDE Director Barry Barish releasing the draft Reference Design Report and preliminary cost estimate to the meeting attendees. With the publication of the reference design, scientists and engineers welcomed the start of the next phase of the ILC project – the Engineering Design. A global R&D programme will drive the three-year engineering phase, which will be organised by a project management team within the GDE. In parallel, members of ACFA also met to share progress on ILC detector development, discuss the Detector Concept Report and initiate a dialogue on the roadmap for the World-Wide Study. The workshop culminated with a banquet, acrobats and an ICFA press conference to publicly release the Reference Design Report.

From Interactions.org: ICFA Releases GDE Reference Design Report for the International Linear Collider

Barry Barish presented Albrecht Wagner and Shin-Ichi Kurokawa with copies of the Reference Design Report.
The International Committee for Future Accelerators (ICFA) today announced the release of the Reference Design Report (RDR) for the International Linear Collider (ILC), a proposed future particle accelerator.

Hurling some 10 billion electrons and their anti-particles, positrons, toward each other at nearly the speed of light, beams in the ILC will collide 14,000 times every second at extremely high energies - 500 billion-electronvolts (GeV). These spectacular collisions create an array of new particles that will answer some of the most fundamental questions about the nature of the universe, such as the origin of mass, dark matter, dark energy, extra dimensions and beyond.

Viewing the Future: ILC Simulations
"Even though it will still be several years before the International Linear Collider (ILC) comes online, scientists have already conducted millions of collision experiments, using detectors that have not been built yet. This is not the result of a new field of clairvoyant physics, but the power of computer simulations..."

Director's Corner
Report from Beijing: The ILC Reference Design Report
The GDE's first major goal was to define the basic parameters and layout for the ILC and document them in a Baseline Configuration Document (BCD). We achieved this at the first GDE meeting held at INFN, Frascati, Italy, in December 2005.

Dr. Hesheng Chen, Director of IHEP, greeting the participants and describing the high-energy physics programme of IHEP
During the next 14 months, the BCD was used as the basis for the detailed design work and value estimate, culminating in the completion of the second major milestone, the publication of the draft ILC Reference Design Report ILC Reference Design Report. We also accomplished this goal and presented the RDR this week in Beijing first at a joint session of the ACFA / GDE meeting and then to the International Linear Collider Steering Committee (ILCSC) and the International Committee for Future Accelerators (ICFA).
