Fermilab Launches Community Envoy Program
Fermilab launched its Community Envoy Program with training about active listening and initiating the first conversation. |
In the 1980's, when the Department of Energy proposed Fermilab as a possible site for the Superconducting Super Collider, a local citizens group spearheaded community opposition to the project. "Fermilab is no longer a good neighbor," proclaimed a full-page newspaper advertisement sponsored by CATCH, or Citizens Against the Collider Here. Fermilab doesn't want to make the same mistake twice. That's one reason why Fermilab has instituted a Community Envoy Program. The main goal of the programme, however, is to create and maintain meaningful relationships with people in the surrounding communities.

KEK Director General Visits the Front
KEK Director General Atsuto Suzuki joined the ILC scientists and engineers to exchange ideas and opinions for the future. |
Just like other particle physics laboratories around the world, KEK is now at a cross roads to make a bold decision about its future. The KEKB factory is now improving world record luminosity day by day; a brand new powerful proton accelerator J-PARC will be almost ready to operate next year; a study for renovating the Photon Factory with a next generation light source facility has begun, and KEK is participating vigorously in the world-wide efforts of the large scale ILC R&D such as ATF-II and STF. The role of the Director General is not only to define the goals of the laboratory, but also to set the course for the field of accelerator physics. Many important developments and foresights are emerging day to day at the forefront of the research, which is why KEK's new Director General Atsuto Suzuki, appointed this April, decided to visit each part of the laboratory one day after another.

Waiting on a rainy day – Fermilab Director Pier Oddone announced this week that repairs will begin on the Meson building, a facility notorious for its leaky roof and quickly becoming an important center of activity for ILC R&D work at the lab.

Niowave looking at fast growth
"...Then there's a project called the International Linear Collider, a proposed 19-mile-long, $12 billion machine that would be the largest accelerator ever built. The project is a long way from implementation. A location hasn't even been chosen, though Fermilab outside Chicago is already vying for it. But it could mean all the business that Niowave could handle."

Developing an International Cost Estimate for the ILC
Our GDE team has about a third of its membership from the Americas, a third from Asia and a third from Europe. This "global" team developed a baseline configuration document (BCD) that lays out the technical description of the ILC, as it is presently envisioned. We produced this BCD through a process in which all major decisions were agreed upon internationally, and the product is one universal document that is used by all.
The Beam Dumps are going to cost HOW much? |
We are rightfully proud of this important accomplishment, and it is a tribute to the strong global collaboration we have formed. Our next task, creating and documenting a universal ILC cost estimate, is an even greater challenge. Not only must we get the costs right, but we must present them in a way that can be understood and used by everyone internationally, in defining the resources that will be needed to build the ILC.
