Gearing up for LCWS 07
All these drivers will have to find new places to park their cars when a big
tent will go up on the parking lot at DESY for LCWS 07. |
"The most important skill of any secretary is to know the experts. You don't have to be able to do everything yourself, but you have to know who to ask!" Ramona Matthes is a secretary at DESY and together with two colleagues and a couple of scientists form the core of the local organising committee for the Linear Collider Workshop and GDE meeting that will take place at DESY from 30 May to 4 June 2007. In physicists' terms it is far too early to even think about this meeting, but in administrative terms the organising team did well to start in August last year – organising a meeting for up to 800 people isn't done in a couple of weeks, and there are many major and minor things that all have to work once the hordes of participants arrive. With three GDE meetings each year and many others at the side, every region of the ILC has learnt this, sometimes the hard way.

Experience the ILC Grid Virtual Organisation
This image displays all jobs currently submitted to the LCG/ EGEE Grid (LHC Computing Grid/Enabling grids for E-sciencE) via the resource brokers monitored, including ILC Jobs (screen shoot of 9 January 2007). |
Ever dreamt of saving computing time? "With the ILC Grid Virtual Organisation, I do in one day what I would do in about 100 days with my personal computer," said Olivier Dadoun, a post-doc at LAL, France.
An important collaboration challenge for the ILC community will be to share, use and manage computing resources at a global level. The Grid computing technology offers a high capacity of computing power. You can send your job all over the world with no need for knowing where it is actually running. Scientific communities such as experiments agree on common sharing rules for resources and build Virtual Organisation (VO). Depending on which VO you belong to, you have a given amount of CPU time and disk space available in the participating computing centres to execute your jobs. There are already various Grid projects on-going in the world, from biology to the Large Hadron Collider.

Japan HEP Community Promotes a Future Strategy for Particle Physics
One possible timeline for high energy physics in Japan presented to FALC by Atsuto Suzuki, KEK Director. It includes two possible branches for the ILC, one fast-tracked and one that follows a KEK-B upgrade. |
Mitsuaki Nozaki, GDE Asian Regional Director, discussed the community-wide consensus on priorities for the future programme in high energy physics in Japan in the Director's Corner of 22 November 2006. At that time, there was only a Japanese version of this important report. Now an English version has been made available, and I would like to take this occasion to make a few additional comments and to point out some highlights of the Japanese strategy. The brief report focuses on the opportunities at the energy frontier and in flavour physics and outlines possible future programmes for Japanese high-energy physics aimed at exploiting these science goals. As for the ILC itself, the report strongly supports a programme aimed toward the ILC, and concludes that "the ILC is expected to establish a new paradigm of particle physics, which will be a breakthrough that is as important as past great achievements such as the discovery of antiparticles or the establishment of the gauge principle."
