Research Director's Report
All common task groups are ready to start

Sakue Yamada
Following the discussions with the representatives of the groups preparing the letters of intent (LOI) and the members of the common task groups during the European Committee for Future Accelerators (ECFA) workshop in Warsaw, we have been working to reinforce the two common task groups, the detector R&D Panel and the Physics Panel, by inviting more members outside the LOI group community. During the same workshop, the Worldwide Study WWS decided to stop their panels in order to avoid overlapping of activities. This decision gave us another reason to strengthen the common task group and to expand its role. Everybody thought that the expected physics consideration of the Physics Panel would be better conducted with a wide scope, which can be brought in by theorists and experts in other fields.

Feature Story
SiD freezes its global parameters
Today's issue features a guest story by Marcel Stanitzki, experimentalist working at Rutherford Appleton Lab in the UK and member of the SiD collaboration.

The third SiD Workshop this year, hosted from 17 to 19 September by the University of Colorado at Boulder, marked an important milestone on SiD's way to the Letter of Intent (LOI): the collaboration froze its detector’s global parameters. The meeting was opened by Barry Barish, who reminded everyone that the "science remains the key to ultimate success" of the ILC programme and that detector development was critical. Given the difficult times for ILC funding both for accelerators and detectors, the meeting included updates on the current funding situation worldwide and on the status in France, Japan, the UK and the US. SiD additionally invited two guest speakers, Howard Nicholson from the US Department of Energy Office of High Energy Physics and Marvin Goldberg from the National Science Foundation, to give the audience an update of the US situation and the view from Washington.

Where have our Nobel physics prizes gone?
International reputations are vital in particle physics, which is far too expensive and complicated to be carried out by single countries. Whichever nation ends up hosting the international linear collider, it would reap scientific and economic rewards.

Japan shows interest in hosting the ILC
Since the Nobel Prize for Physics was awarded this week to three Japanese-born researchers, it seems like Japan has gone particle-physics crazy, or at least the Japanese government has.

Progress and plans for ILC R&D at JLab

The JLab CEBAF 6-GeV electron accelerator upgrade to 12 GeV
Jefferson Laboratory (JLab) in Newport News, Virginia, is a major DOE laboratory for Nuclear Physics. The laboratory has a pioneering 6-GeV electron accelerator that is based on superconducting radiofrequencey (RF) accelerating technology. JLab has a great deal of expertise, experience and facilities for superconducting RF technology, making them a natural and very important partner for our ILC R&D efforts. Along with our project managers, I visited JLab last month. We wanted to carry out dedicated and in-depth meetings with the JLab ILC researchers, in which we reviewed the present ILC work and explored the options for JLab's future role in the ILC.

Weltmaschine exhibition opens in Berlin

An unusual location for an unusual project: on Tuesday the LHC exhibition 'Weltmaschine' was opened in an unserviced subway station in Germany's capital Berlin by German minister of education and research Annette Schavan. Gigantic photographs by Peter Ginter from the LHC construction phase stretch from platform to ceiling, and along the sides genuine machine and detector parts, along with texts and hands-on exhibits, tell the story (in German and English) of the 'world machine' LHC. It also features the world's first hands-on exhibit on the Higgs mechanism! Photo: Karen Massine
