From Fermilab Today: Sharing silicon know-how with Chinese partners

With the quiet, deft manner of a jeweler showing his wares, physicist Cai Xiao opened a black box that, in a James Bond movie, might hold a stash of diamonds. This one held something every bit as precious. Inside lay a small, green circuit board topped with three shining silver strips: a silicon detector.
For Cai (pronounced "sigh"), this was the culmination of an almost year-long collaboration with a team at Fermilab's SiDet. Now that the sensor was finished, it was almost time for him to go home.

Progress report for the European ILC-HiGrade project

Last week, collaborators from the ILC-HiGrade European Commission Framework 7 Project gathered at CERN, Switzerland for their annual meeting. Each project work package, from cavity, coupler and tuner production to ILC governance studies, was reviewed on 25 February. The ILC-HiGrade project is conducted by six European institutions: DESY, CEA, CERN, CNRS/IN2P3, INFN and Oxford University. 'ILC-HiGrade' stands for 'International Linear Collider and High Gradient Superconducting RF-Cavities' and one of the main objectives of the proposal is a small serial production of accelerating cavities at highest gradients.

The First T2K Neutrino Event Observed at Super-Kamiokande
Tsukuba, February 24, 2010. Physicists from the Japanese-led multinational T2K collaboration announced today that they had made the first detection of a neutrino which had travelled all the way under Japan from their neutrino beamline at the J-PARC facility in Tokai village (about an hour north of Tokyo by train) to the gigantic Super-Kamiokande underground detector near the west coast of Japan, 295 km (185 miles) away from Tokai.

In last week's guest Director's Corner written by Mike Harrison, Americas Regional Director, he discussed his responsibilities to communicate and inform different parts of the US government on the motivation, status and plans for the ILC. Today's column might be considered a sequel, in that I am addressing another important area of communication for the ILC and particle physics more generally: the need to engage our scientist colleagues in other areas of science ranging from biology to astronomy. There is no natural forum for such communication, except through general-interest articles in Scientific American or equivalent journals. I had a rare opportunity to address such an audience on the "New Frontiers in Particle Physics" as an invited plenary speaker at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in early February.

The fifth General ILC Workshop (ILC10) is being organised by the Chinese Institute of High-Energy Physics, and will take place at the Friendship Hotel, Beijing, from 26–30 March.
