From DESY: European XFEL accelerator components go into production

16 September 2010 An important milestone was reached on the way to the European XFEL superconducting linear accelerator: the start of the industrial production of the superconducting accelerator structures. Yesterday and today, kick-off workshops took place to coordinate the future collaboration of DESY with two industrial firms. The superconducting accelerator structures are a joint contribution of DESY and INFN Milano, coordinated by DESY. Category: Feature | Tagged: , ,

China reaching the target gradient

9 September 2010 A 1.3-gigahertz TESLA-type nine-cell niobium superconducting cavity, named PKU3, as the third nine-cell cavity fabricated by the superconducting radiofrequency (RF) group at Peking University, Beijing, China, achieved an accelerating gradient of 28.6 megavolts per metre (MV/m) at an unloaded quality factor of 4×109 in its second vertical test at Jefferson Lab (JLab), USA on 9 August 2010. This cavity is the first nine-cell cavity with end group components in China reaching a gradient usable for the ILC. Category: Around the World | Tagged: , , , , ,

Summer Challenge programme for young intelligence

2 September 2010 About 90 students from all parts of Japan gathered at the Summer Challenge programme held at KEK, Tsukuba from 21 to 29 August 2010. Starting in 2007, this programme intended for junior students who are interested in high-energy physics was the fourth in the series this year. Category: Around the World | Tagged: ,

From KEK Highlights: Never lost in translation

12 August 2010 Every day, KEK welcomes scientists and students from around the world. Some of them come here as collaborators who work on the international projects and programmes using cutting-edge facilities at KEK. Some visit as users who wish to use the beamlines at the Photon Factory to look into the smallest worlds. Many graduate students will write up their hard work here into their thesis. Many of them stay only days or weeks, but some of them stay longer to concentrate on the R&D for months or even years, like Dr. Philip Bambade from LAL in Orsay, France. From Fermilab: Fermilab experiments narrow allowed mass range for Higgs boson

29 July 2010 Batavia, Ill.—New constraints on the elusive Higgs particle are more stringent than ever before. Scientists of the CDF and DZero collider experiments at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Fermilab revealed their latest Higgs search results today (July 26) at the International Conference on High Energy Physics, held in Paris from July 22-28. Their results rule out a significant fraction of the allowed mass range established by earlier experiments. Category: Feature | Tagged: , , , , , , ,

From CERN: ICHEP 2010 conference highlights first results from the LHC

29 July 2010 Geneva, 26 July 2010. First results from the LHC at CERN1 are being revealed at ICHEP, the world’s largest international conference on particle physics, which has attracted more than 1000 participants to its venue in Paris. The spokespersons of the four major experiments at the LHC – ALICE, ATLAS, CMS and LHCb – are today presenting measurements from the first three months of successful LHC operation at 3.5 TeV per beam, an energy three and a half times higher than previously achieved at a particle accelerator. From interactions.org: World’s particle physics labs take amateur photographers behind the scenes

8 July 2010 Picture this: For the first time, amateur photographers around the world collide with the past, present and future of particle physics. Category: Around the World | Tagged: ,

From DESY: Record wavelength at FLASH

24 June 2010 For the first time, FLASH produced laser light with a wavelength of 4.45 nanometres; thus, DESY's free-electron laser for soft X-ray light considerably beat its previous record of 6.5 nanometres. At the same time, the peak intensity of single light pulses nearly doubled, with 0.3 millijoule. Prior to this, there was a five-month machine upgrade, above all with a significant improvement of the superconducting linear accelerator and the installation of a seeding experiment together with the University of Hamburg. From DESY: Hamburg accelerates particle physics

17 June 2010 The University of Hamburg and DESY have won a shared Alexander von Humboldt professorship for the development of accelerators and particle physics. The renowned award goes to Professor Brian Foster, currently head of Particle Physics at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research announced today. Assuming successful conclusions to negotiations, Foster will receive up to 5 million Euros over a period of five years to fund research into the development and realisation of acceleration technologies for particle physics and continued analysis of data from DESY's flagship accelerator, HERA. From KEK: The fifth POSIPOL workshop held at KEK

10 June 2010 The POSIPOL 2010 workshop was held from 31 May to 2 June at KEK. It was the fifth in the POSIPOL series of workshops dealing with the physics aspects, the design issues, and the open questions concerning a polarised positron source in the framework of the next-generation electron-positron colliders such as the ILC or the Compact Linear Collider Study CLIC. A total of 44 scientists from Europe, Asia and the US attended the workshop, including some via videoconference. The main topic of the POSIPOL 2010 was design of the polarized positron sources for the ILC and for CLIC. The only linear accelerator which used a positron beam was the SLAC Linear Collider (SLC) at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory in the US "For CLIC, we will need to produce 18 times more positrons than SLC, and 65 times more for the ILC", said Dr. Louis Rinolfi (CERN), who is convener of the ILC/CLIC joint working group for positron studies, "these numbers show how far we are from what where want to be," Rinolfi said.
