Positron polarisation workshop: POSIPOL 2014, 27 – 29 August
POSIPOL 2014 will be held at the new library of Ichinoseki-city, Iwate. As the ninth of POSIPOL workshop series, POSIPOL 2014 will discuss issues of polarised positron sources, high intensity positron sources, X-ray/Gamma-ray sources, and their applications. The positron sources for the linear colliders, ILC and CLIC, will be main subjects, but positron sources for other colliders such as B-factories will also be discussed. Min Zhang and Qian Pan | 23 February 2012Jialin Xie, a 92-year-old specialist in particle accelerators, was awarded the State Top Scientific and Technological Award by President Jintao Hu at a ceremony held in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on 14 February. Xie is best known for helping China build its first high-energy electron linear accelerator in 1964 and for contributing to the research and design of the Beijing Electron Positron Collider in the 1980s.

Min Zhang | 24 February 2011On 18 February 2011, a delegation of Global Design Effort representatives visited the Orient Tantalum Industry Co. Ltd (OTIC), Ningxia, a leading niobium company in China. The group consisted of ILC project managers Akira Yamamoto and Marc Ross, together with Robert Rimmer of Thomas Jefferson Laboratory in the US, accompanied by Asian Linear Collider Steering Committee Chairman Jie Gao and ILC group member Jiyuan Zhai of the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) in Beijing.

Min Zhang | 6 January 2011From 7 to 8 December 2010, the IHEP-KEK 1.3-gigahertz superconducting radiofrequency (SRF) technology collaboration meeting was held at the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP), Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing. This was the third in a series of meetings held regularly since 2009. Eight high-energy accelerator experts from KEK and Kyoto University and nearly thirty researchers from IHEP participated.

Min Zhang | 4 November 2010Just a week after the International Workshop on Linear Colliders (IWLC2010) held in Geneva, China's Linear Collider Workshop (CLCW2010) organised by the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) was held in Beijing Laffitte Hotel from 30 to 31 October. For the first time, China's linear collider community gathered together to exchange ideas and have a comprehensive discussion about China's participation in the International Linear Collider (ILC) and the Compact Linear Collider study (CLIC).

Min Zhang | 2 September 2010The European X-ray Free Electron Laser (European XFEL) and the Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) are two important international cooperative science facilities mainly led by Germany. China has participated in the R&D of some detectors, low-temperature systems, high-performance undulators, superconducting material and special material for these projects. On 29 August 2008, the project "Basic Research on the FEL and FAIR" supported by China's national programme for key basic research and development (officially called 973 programme) started. The project is coordinated by the Institute of High Energy Physics, Chinese Academy of Science (IHEP), and about ten different research institutes, universities and corporations in China participate in this project, including the Institute of Modern Physics, Peking University, Tsinghua University, Orient Tantalum Industry Corp. (OTIC), etc.

Min Zhang | 22 July 2010A 1.3-Gigahertz low-loss type large-grain nine-cell superconducting cavity called IHEP-01 produced at the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) in Beijing, China, achieved an accelerating gradient of 20 Megavolts per metre in its first vertical test at KEK on 1 July. This may not be the design gradient yet, but it marks an important progress on the research and development of superconducting radio frequency (SRF) technology in China.
