An ILC Higgs factory – is it enough?

| 27 September 2012 GDE Project Manager Nick Walker reports from a focused, positive and lively meeting in Cracow and the impact the discussions can have on the ILC. Would a staged approach - starting at 250 GeV to make the ILC a Higgs factory and ramping up to 500 GeV later - make for a cheaper machine? Where are the potential savings, and how long would it take to build an ILC Higgs factory? Category: Director's Corner | Tagged: , , ,

“The GDE must write” – The first steps to the ILC Technical Design Report

| 23 November 2011 ILC Project Manager Nick Walker describes the several books that will form up the ILC Technical Design Report. This ambitious document, planned to be released by Spring 2013, should reflect the enormous job led by the Global Design Effort over the last years. Category: Director's Corner | Tagged: , ,

Common goals

| 27 January 2011 The SLAC BAW was the second and last such workshop of the so-called Top Level Change Control (TLCC) process, which has been going on for the last twelve months. The SLAC BAW focused on the two remaining TLCC themes: a reduced beam-power parameter set and the location and layout of the positron source. Category: Director's Corner | Tagged: , , , , , , , ,

Here is to Beijing – the Great Wall – and windowless seminar rooms

| 25 March 2010 [...] As a truly global project, the ILC remains the dream of hundreds of physicists around the globe. Many of them will be joining me in Beijing for the workshop, to discuss the impressive technical progress we are making. -- Nick Walker Category: Director's Corner | Tagged: , ,

What’s in a word?

| 28 May 2009 During the day-to-day activities of Global Design Effort Project Management, I find myself using certain nouns more frequently than others. Recently, the word review has featured prominently in our vocabulary. Category: Director's Corner | Tagged: , , , ,

A year in the life of the ILC

| 18 December 2008 ...it seems appropriate to take a brief look back over a year which has certainly had its ups and downs. Category: Director's Corner | Tagged:

The value of science

| 24 April 2008 What is your science worth? A question I have recently heard raised during many over-coffee discussions. The question is of course rhetorical: none of us can really answer it. But the fact that it is being asked at all is part of a reaction to the GDE management's policy to make the cost of the project a central focus of the Technical Design Phase. Project Managers’ World Tour

| 25 October 2007 I am currently waiting to get on a plane to fly to the Fermilab Global Design Effort meeting, where we will finally say goodbye to the Reference Design phase, and formally begin the new Engineering Design (ED) phase for the ILC. Category: Director's Corner | Tagged: ,
