ILC candidate site in Japan announced

文部科学省は来年度予算の概算要求に超大型加速器・国際リニアコライダー（ＩＬＣ）の調査費として約５千万円を計上する方向で調整している。ＩＬＣとして調査費が盛り込まれるのは初めて。(Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology will create a 50 million-yen budget for ILC reserach effort. It is a first time to create a dedicated budget for the ILC.)

Japanska forskare har föreslagit att den nya partikelacceleratorn International Linear Collider byggs i Tohokuprovinsen, som drabbades hårt av tsnunamin för två år sedan. (Japanese researchers have suggested that the International Linear Collider should be built in Tohoku region, which was hit hard by tsunami two years ago).

Se espera que el Colisionador Lineal Internacional (ILC por sus siglas en inglés) permita continuar estudiando el Bosón de Higgs y otras partículas todavía desconocidas más allá de los datos obtenidos gracias al Gran Colisionador de Hadrones europeo. 一个日本委员会8月23日宣布，建议在该国东北地区的一个地点建设国际直线对撞机（ILC）。对此，日本文部科学省表示，科学家选定的结果仅为“参考”，是否申请建设ILC将另行决定。(A Japanese committee announced a proposal of construction site for the ILC in the northeast of the country on August 23. The Japanese Ministry of Education said that the result presented by the scientists is only a “reference”, for the decision to whether to construct the ILC.)

The recommendation said that the 19-mile-long particle collider of the next generation, if developed, should be in the Iwate and Miyagi prefectures’ Kitakami Mountains. The choice has been made by the committee in a 63-to-37 vote. It was after a wary analysis of two candidate sites that were finalized. The sites included the Saga and Fukuoka prefectures’ Sefuri Mountains and the Kitakami Mountains.

In a press conference this morning, the Japanese high-energy physics community’s site evaluation committee for the proposed International Linear Collider announced its recommendation: If the 19-mile-long, next-generation particle collider is built in Japan, it should be located in the Kitakami mountains of the Iwate and Miyagi prefectures.

リニアコライダーの誘致は、わが国にとって極めて重要であり、オールジャパンで実現することが必要である。今後、日本政府には、国内誘致を正式表明し、国際交渉を呼びかけるとともに、各省庁横断的な体制づくりを進め、国際リニアコライダー設置の実現を図られたい。(The Chaiman of the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI) issued a statement on the ILC site evaluation announcement: The invitation of the ILC is very importtany issue for Japan, and we should realize the project by pan-Japanese effort. We strongly wish that the Japanese goverment to officially express nation’s interest, and call for the international negotiations. We also wish the government to establish the inter-ministries system to building the ILC)

「国際リニアコライダー」（ＩＬＣ）を推進する国内の研究者組織「ＩＬＣ戦略会議」は２３日、東京都文京区の同大で記者会見し、岩手・宮城両県の北上山地を建設候補地として選んだと発表した。現在、海外で具体的検討はなく、ＩＬＣ実現が決まれば北上山地が有力な候補地となる。(ILC strategy council announced on 23 August that the council has chosen Kitakami mountains for the candidate construction site for the ILC. There is no serious discussion on the ILC construction in any country other than Japan, and Kitakami will be a promising candidate if the ILC to be realised)

ＩＬＣの国内建設候補地として北上山地が決まったことを受け、誘致に取り組んできた自治体や団体は喜びを表し、奥州市などでは祝福の横断幕を掲げた。ただ、巨額な建設費への懸念から政府は誘致を決めておらず、建設実現はまだ遠い。(Following the announcement of the ILC candidate site, officials of the local governments or related bodies in Kitakami savored the joy. However, Japanese government has not decided whether Japan will call for a bid. The realisation of the ILC is still far away)

But the decision on how to spend reconstruction money will be up to the politicians, warns Satoru Yamashita, a University of Tokyo physicist who chairs Japan’s ILC Strategy Council. And despite Japanese enthusiasm for the project, Yamashita told ScienceInsider that Japan is not going ahead on its own. “It is the ‘international’ linear collider,” he says. Only after establishing international partnerships will Japan’s government “officially decide to ‘go,’ ” he says.

「国際リニアコライダー」について、日本の研究者グループが「東北に誘致すべきだ」とする報告書をまとめました。(A group of Japanese researchers compiled a report on the ILC construction candidate site in Japan. It states that the machine should be build jn Kitakami.)

The group of researchers told reporters that they prefer the Kitakami area, which straddles Iwate and Miyagi prefectures, over the other candidate, the Sefuri mountain area in Kyushu.

ＩＬＣは宇宙誕生直後の様子を再現することで、宇宙の成り立ちに関わる未知の物理現象を解明できる可能性があり、ノーベル賞級の成果が期待されている。(ILC has a possibility to elucidate a unknown physical phenomena, and expect to lead to discoveries deserving Nobel Prizes)

「ＩＬＣ立地評価会議」は２３日、北上山地（岩手県、宮城県）が建設候補地として最適とする評価結果を正式に発表した。地盤に問題がないうえ、多くの科学者が集まる研究環境を整えやすいなど、巨大実験施設を作るのに有利な条件がそろっていると判断した。(ILC strategy council announced the result of the evaluation on the ILC construction site in Japan on 23 August.
