Towards a single directorate for ILC and CLIC physics and detectors studies

| 15 March 2012 The ILC Steering Committee is now considering a new organisation for a linear collider project that includes both the ILC and CLIC programmes, in view of their individual progress and the cooperation between them, and it envisions a merger of physics and detector activities. It is a challenge to create a new mechanism that will satisfy all parties, but we should try hard to find one. Category: Research Director's Report | Tagged: , , ,

The Higgs mandate

| 16 February 2012 One of the primary goals of the next global ILC workshop in Daegu, Korea, in April 2012 is to clarify the physics mandate of the ILC corresponding to narrowed-down physics scenarios, based in particular on LHC results from the Higgs boson search. Design report in the making: drafting the DBD

| 19 January 2012 The year 2012 will be very busy and exciting. The main task for the ILC physics and detector community is to complete Detailed Baseline Design report summarising our effort since 2007. To achieve this goal, coordination between the detector groups and with the Global Design Effort is essential, and we are fulfilling this mission. Detector R&D “coopetition” between ILC and CLIC

| 15 December 2011 Though the differences between ILC and CLIC detectors are marked, ILC detector concepts have been shown to be valuable for the machine being designed by its competitor-cooperator, the CLIC design study. Category: Research Director's Report | Tagged: ,

Articulating the physics case for the ILC

| 17 November 2011 The ILC Detailed Baseline Design report will contain a chapter that describes the physics opportunities that the ILC will offer. The LHC is bringing us new information about particles in the ILC energy range. But what exactly is the Large Hadron Collider telling us, and what are the implications for the ILC programme? Michael Peskin encourages members of the ILC community to debate this question and contribute to the report. Category: Research Director's Report | Tagged: , , , ,

Progress made during LCWS11 in Granada

| 20 October 2011 This year's linear collider workshop was a time of fruitful discussion and planning. Key discussions helped shape the near future in the period before the release of the detailed baseline design. Category: Research Director's Report | Tagged: ,

Past and future of the Worldwide Study

| 22 September 2011 The groundwork for the Worldwide Study, a global linear collider physics and detector partnership, was laid more than ten years ago. Since then it has been a driving force for coordination and development of physics studies and detector R&D around the world. Category: Research Director's Report | Tagged: ,

The impact of ILC detector R&D

| 18 August 2011 Although the actual construction date of the ILC accelerator and its detectors is very uncertain, the impact of the R&D for ILC detectors is very real. Sometimes we tend to overlook the deep impact the work initiated by and carried out within the ILC detector community has already had on the whole particle physics community and beyond. Important meetings to come, important discussions to happen

| 21 July 2011 The high-energy physics community is gearing up to learn the latest from the world’s large particle colliders, to be presented at conferences this summer. The reports may guide the future efforts of the ILC community coming after the detector community’s detailed baseline design. Category: Research Director's Report | Tagged: , , ,

The gift of research rises from the rubble

| 16 June 2011 Hitoshi Yamamoto offers a personal account of his navigation through the chaos brought on by shutdowns of transportation systems, electrical grids and running water immediately following the March earthquake. Amid the confusion, he remained mindful of the work of the ILC, resulting in welcome news for detector research. Category: Research Director's Report | Tagged: , , ,
