On 22 March, scientists succeeded in the extraction of a 1-millisecond beam for a 162.5-megahertz bunch train. Image: Kröller-Müller Museum | 22 March 2012DESY's synchrotron radiation source DORIS has helped settle a decades-old question of whether van Gogh painted the 1886 Still life with meadow flowers. Using macro scanning X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, scientists were able to analyse the canvas's layers of paint with greater detail than had been possible previously. Earlier X-ray analyses had shown that a painter - suspected to be van Gogh - had painted a scene of two wrestlers on the canvas before painting the flower still life over it several months later. DESY's work revealed even more, in particular, the color palette the painter used for the two wrestlers and their relative state of dress. Both attributes helped authenticate the work as a van Gogh. A beam of particles (figuratively) painted a picture of greater detail. Read the DESY press release

From 27 February to 24 March, about 8000 high school students in 31 countries come to one of about 120 nearby universities or research centres for one day in order to unravel the mysteries of particle physics. Lectures from active scientists give insight in topics and methods of basic research at the fundaments of matter and forces, enabling the students to perform measurements on real data from particle physics experiments themselves. At the end of each day, as in an international research collaboration, the participants join in a video conference for discussion and combination of their results. Images: Jefferson Lab | 23 February 2012Charles Reece, deputy director of Jefferson Lab’s Institute for Superconducting Radiofrequency Science and Technology, leads GDE Executive Committee members on a tour of the new facilities that will be available upon completion of the Technology and Engineering Development Facility, a $72 million structure that will keep the lab in the forefront of SRF developments. John Hogan, Jefferson Lab SRF Cryomodule Production Leader, shows GDE Executive Committee members the sixth C100 cryomodule (of ten) being produced at Jefferson Lab as part of the lab's 12 GeV CEBAF Upgrade Project. This cryomodule is at the cold-mass assembly stage and Hogan is discussing the integrated design of the components as they relate to overall cryomodule performance. 2 February 2012The world’s fastest (and shortest) movie has superconducting radiofrequency technology to thank for its entry into the Guinness Book of World Records. Shot at DESY’s FLASH X-ray laser, which accelerates electrons in much the same way as the ILC will, it shows a micro model of the German Brandenburg Gate at an interval of a mere 50 femtoseconds between two frames. 26 January 2012An NHK television news crew followed around ILC scientists for two days last week as they visited proposed sites for building the ILC in Japan. NHK's five-minute segment appeared on the 7 a.m. news, reaching an estimated 30 million homes. Scientists were excited to be part of the Japanese news media. Here, Global Design Effort Director Barry Barish addresses the camera as he explains the purpose of the ILC.
