In order for an international project like the ILC to succeed, being able to construct the accelerator itself is not enough. To make the future ILC city an attractive and comfortable place to come and stay for a prolonged period, it is also critical that the site is geologically sound and that the living conditions of the staff and their families are agreeable.

Hitoshi Yamamoto offers a personal account of his navigation through the chaos brought on by shutdowns of transportation systems, electrical grids and running water immediately following the March earthquake. Amid the confusion, he remained mindful of the work of the ILC, resulting in welcome news for detector research.

A joint international linear collider workshop, LCWS10 and ILC10, will be held in Beijing from 26 to 30 March. LCWS10 is organised by the World Wide Study of the Physics and Detectors for future linear e+ e- colliders (WWS) representing the physics and detector efforts, while ILC10 is organised by the Global Design Effort (GDE) covering the accelerator efforts.

I have just attended the CLIC09 workshop at CERN.... A large fraction of work done on physics and detectors is common to both CLIC and ILC, and ILC detectors are already benefitting from CERN expertise in detector integration and push-pull design. --By Hitoshi Yamamoto
