About Lyn Evans

Lyn Evans (CERN) is the Linear Collider Director.

LHC commissioning continues in spite of obstacles

| 14 May 2015 After almost two years of major work on the machine and its detectors, the Large Hadron Collider is in the middle of the so-called commissioning phase. During the roughly two months of commissioning, the operators check out every little system in the large complex that is the LHC. LCC Director and former LHC project leader Lyn Evans watches and learns from the sidelines. Category: Director's Corner | Tagged: , , , ,

Directorate on the road

| 22 January 2015 The LCC Directorate is constantly reinforcing its bridges, especially with our Japanese colleagues. At this critical time before the decision whether Japan will offer to host the ILC is taken, they travelled to the designated site to inspect port, roads and discuss with local and national authorities, reports LCC Director Lyn Evans. If the ILC gets built, some real bridges will have to be reinforced so that heavy high-tech can travel from the port to the site. Category: Director's Corner | Tagged: , , , , , ,

Voice your dream for the ILC!

| 30 October 2014 The ILC may be the first science project in the world that gets approval by video message. But only if there are enough of them, says LCC Director Lyn Evans. Everybody is invited to share his and her enthusiasm for the project. Category: Director's Corner | Tagged: , ,

ILC: What’s happening in Japan

| 18 September 2014 With a technical design well in place and R&D continuing on accelerator and detectors, the community is waiting for the next big milestone to occur towards the realisation of the ILC. Apart from crucial next results from the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, all eyes are on the potential ILC host Japan. So what’s happening in Japan? From shutdown to cooldown: the LHC is preparing to get back online

| 1 May 2014 The LHC’s long shutdown is nearing its end. All magnet interconnects have been opened and checked, and with the first of eight sectors scheduled for cooldown this month, it’s well on its way towards new discoveries, says LCC Director Lyn Evans. After all, results from the LHC determine the future of particle physics around the world, and the ILC is no exception. Category: Director's Corner | Tagged: , , ,

Dishing out experience

| 9 January 2014 The ILC will be a truly global scientific undertaking when it’s built – but it’s not the only one. The ALMA observatory in Chile for example, built to tell us more about how stars and planets are formed, is run by a collaboration that is distributed around the world. LCC Director Lyn Evans was invited on a field trip to three observatories in Chile as a member of a visiting committee set up by the European Southern Observatory ESO and learned a lot about travel in South America, commissioning telescopes and running large science projects. Doors open wide

| 26 September 2013 Dialogue with the general public is important for good relations with the neighbours of research labs. This weekend, CERN holds its Open Days to share the excitement of science and life at a lab with an estimated 50,000 visitors per day. Let’s keep this tradition up. Moving from emotions to negotiations

| 27 June 2013 Physics isn’t usually associated with big emotions, and in the everyday life at the labs this is probably true. However, our field has recently had many momentous events, and the excitement these have caused have made particle physics one of the most popular science topics in the world. Let’s use this momentum to get ahead in our plan to build the ILC – maybe in stages and in Japan? Category: Director's Corner | Tagged: , , ,

From technology to diplomacy

| 7 March 2013 On 21 February the International Linear Collider Steering Committee (ILCSC) handed over to the new linear collider structure. The Linear Colllider Board (LCB), chaired by Sachio Komamiya, replaces ILCSC, and the Linear Collider Collaboration (LCC) replaces GDE and the groups working on physics and detectors for both the ILC and CLIC. The LCC of course also includes the CLIC study. Linear Collider Director Lyn Evans looks ahead. Category: Director's Corner | Tagged: , , , , , ,

A time of transition, or When men and mountains meet

and | 21 February 2013 Today represents a crossroads in the global efforts towards a linear collider. We are officially making the transition from the International Linear Collider Steering Committee and Global Design Efforts to the new Linear Collider Board and Linear Collider Collaboration that will coordinate the next phase of the global R&D towards a high-energy electron-positron collider to complement the LHC. GDE Director Barry Barish and LCC Director Lyn Evans share their vision in a joint Director’s Corner. Category: Director's Corner | Tagged: , , , ,
