24 January 2013The DEPFET structure is one of the candidate technologies for the creation of the most transparent pixelated detector in history. Originally developed for the ILC's predecessor TESLA and a firm candidate for the ILC experiments, it has been selected as the baseline technology for the Belle-II experiment in Japan, a shining example of technology transfer in high-energy physics. In a paper submitted to IEEE Transactions on Nuclear Science the collaboration reviews its recent progress in the light of the challenging vertex detector requirements of a linear electron-positron collider at the energy frontier.

Qian Pan | 24 January 2013When the New Year’s bell was still echoing in the air, physicists from China and Japan gathered in Beijing to attend the fifth IHEP-KEK collaboration meeting on 1.3-GHz superconducting radiofrequency (SRF) technology which was held at the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP), Chinese Academy of Sciences from 7 to 8 January 2013. Six high-energy accelerator experts from KEK and Kyoto University and nearly twenty physicists from IHEP participated.

Rika Takahashi | 20 December 2012After the official handover ceremony of the TDR draft in Tokyo last Saturday, ILC experts, policy makers and members of industry discussed the potential of building the ILC in Japan. One conclusion was that physicists from all over the world would be welcome in Japan, even though they may be considered strange by some.

Rika Takahashi | 8 November 2012The Japan association of high-energy physicists has published a proposal of “phased execution” for the International Linear Collider which was accepted by the Japanese high-energy physics community. The so-called phased execution or staged approach is the plan to build a shorter ILC accelerator than the one designed in the ILC TDR, as a first step of the project.

Rika Takahashi | 1 November 2012On 24 October, a symposium to boost activities to invite the ILC to Japan was held at Tokyo University, Tokyo, Japan. This event received great attention. One of the reason was CERN's Director-General Rolf Heuer's talk, which was delivered for the first time in Japan since the discovery of Higgs-like particle in July.

Rika Takahashi and Qian Pan | 11 October 2012The former chair of the International Linear Collider Steering Committee and of the Asian Committee for Future Accelerators, Shin-ichi Kurokawa, has received the highest award that the People’s Republic of China gives to foreign experts: the Friendship Award of China. The awardees also met Prime Minister Wen Jiabao.
