Japanese civil engineers dig deep in Europe

, and | 1 March 2012 Ten members from the Japanese Society for Civil Engineering’s committee for civil works for future ILC facilities came to Europe in February to look at current civil engineering projects like CERN’s LINAC4 and the European XFEL in Hamburg and to discuss administrative challenges. By the end of March next year, the committee will publish draft guidelines on civil solutions for a potential ILC in Japan. Category: Around the World | Tagged: , , , ,

Jialin Xie wins China’s top science award

and | 23 February 2012 Jialin Xie, a 92-year-old specialist in particle accelerators, was awarded the State Top Scientific and Technological Award by President Jintao Hu at a ceremony held in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on 14 February. Xie is best known for helping China build its first high-energy electron linear accelerator in 1964 and for contributing to the research and design of the Beijing Electron Positron Collider in the 1980s. From CERN Courier: The SuperB approach to high luminosity

9 February 2012 The next-generation B factory to be built in Italy will reach new levels in luminosity by employing the innovative crab-waist scheme at the beam collision point. The SuperB concept represents a real breakthrough in collider design. The low-emittance ring has its roots in R&D for the International Linear Collider (ILC) and could be used as a system-test for the design of the ILC damping ring. The invention of the crab-waist final focus could also have an impact on the current generation of circular colliders. Read more in CERN Courier Category: Around the World | Tagged: , , ,

From CERN Courier: Council solicits opinion to chart the future of European particle physics

2 February 2012 During its December meetings, CERN Council announced that an Open Symposium will be held in Cracow on 10–13 September 2012 for the purpose of updating the European Strategy for Particle Physics. Council adopted Europe’s current strategy for the field in July 2006 with an understanding that it be brought up to date at appropriate intervals of typically five years. The Open Symposium is part of a process designed to get the maximum input from the particle-physics community, as well as from other stakeholders both inside and outside Europe, as Europe’s strategy forms part of a global whole. China awards Shin-ichi Kurokawa for his international scientific cooperation

| 2 February 2012 Shin-ichi Kurokawa, professor emeritus of KEK, has been awarded the 2011 award for International Scientific Cooperation by the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Since the eighties, Kurokawa has been actively promoting academic cooperation and exchanges in science and technology between Japan and China, and later expanded it to Asian-wide collaborative research. He also served as chair of the Asian Committee for Future Accelerators and of the ILC Steering Committee. Category: Around the World | Tagged: , , , ,

The capability for producing niobium sheets

| 26 January 2012 Japanese company Tokyo Denkai is boosting high-purity niobium production and processing with some new equipment and a better-outfitted shop. Should the ILC be built, the company will be able to handle the large order of niobium needed for accelerator cavities. Category: Around the World | Tagged: , , , , ,

Pushing technology, expanding industry

| 12 January 2012 Canada-based PAVAC Industries recently set up a second shop in Fermilab’s backyard. Their work in superconducting cavities pushes their technological capabilities, enabling them to expand into other accelerator applications such as flue gas treatment for coal plants.
