Barry Barish | 22 March 2012The Global Design Effort Executive Committee met face to face in Washington, DC, last month. One of the main goals was to agree on the detailed plan towards completing the Technical Design Report, including decisions about the level of detail that will be included in the actual report and how to ensure that the backup documentation will be readily available.

Barry Barish | 15 March 2012How should we approach questions on siting and funding the ILC? How should the construction project be governed and managed? What will be the responsibilities of the host country? How can in-kind contributions be managed most effectively? The Global Design Effort has addressed these and other such implementation issues in a new draft document submitted to the International Linear Collider Steering Committee. We make the draft available today and welcome your comments.

Barry Barish | 8 March 2012The International Linear Collider Steering Committee, chaired by Jon Bagger, met at Oxford University on 2 February. The main order of business was to plan the future of the ILC effort, following completion of the Technical Design Report.

Barry Barish | 1 March 2012During a face-to-face working meeting of the Global Design Effort Executive Committee, held in Washington DC last month, invited guests discussed with us how science is supported in the US system, including new project approval, the yearly budget process and the formulation of science policy.

Ewan Paterson | 23 February 2012This simple question does not have a simple answer. The ILC linear accelerator length issue was recently discussed during a Baseline Technical Review at KEK, as there are many technical choices that can affect it.

Barry Barish | 16 February 2012There are two very different technical approaches to implementing a future TeV-scale linear collider. The International Linear Collider is based on a superconducting radiofrequency main linac, while the Compact Linear Collider uses a two-beam acceleration concept. How will this lead to a single linear collider project?

Barry Barish | 9 February 2012On 19 and 20 January 2012, the third Baseline Technical Review to finalise the Technical Design Report baseline was held at KEK laboratory in Japan. The meeting reviewed the proposed cavity gradient performance, cavity integration, and the main linac integration and interfaces to the ILC conventional facilities, including radiofrequency power, control and interfaces to conventional facilities. A special meeting on superconducting radiofrequency costs followed this meeting on 21 January.

Steinar Stapnes | 26 January 2012There's a lot to be optimistic and excited about in 2012. CERN’s Large Hadron Collider results should provide guidance towards a linear collider implementation and the linear collider community is technically well prepared. The ILC technology is well developed and the Technical Design Report is under way. The CLIC technology is also moving rapidly forward: the physics and detectors volume of the Conceptual Design Report was completed just last December.

Barry Barish | 19 January 2012The Sixth International Accelerator School for Linear Colliders was held from 6 to 17 November at the Asilomar Conference Center in Pacific Grove, California, US. The Global Design Effort has co-sponsored this successful school from inception and we are proud of the fact that many graduates have gone on to careers in accelerator science, including at the ILC.
