A team at DESY has created a complete virtual-reality three-dimensional ILC. They have combined information from various computer-aided design systems and about all areas of the ILC together in one model that you can now walk through. This model can highlight problems before they become costly and is a great motivator for the owners of the individual systems.

LHC upgrades, linear colliders, muon colliders, neutrino experiments, even theory - the list of projects to discuss on the strategy list was long. The nearly 500 participants at CERN Council's Open Symposium on European Strategy for Particle Physics did however manage to cover all of those and more. A new stage show based on accelerators and accelerator physics is taking off in Germany this month. Conceived by two ILC scientists at DESY, it shows the basic ingredients of a particle accelerator, complete with all the fun stuff, to schoolchildren ages 12 and up. It even gives a live audience-involving demonstration of the fundamental acceleration principle of the ILC.

Tracks show the paths of particles passing through the time projection chamber, the tracker prototype for the ILD detector, in a DESY test beam last week. Six brand-new readout modules of the Micromegas type - one possible module type for the final detector - were mounted to the TPC endplate and produced beautiful tracks both from cosmic and beam particles.

The LHC experiments are definitely homing in on a Higgs boson in a mass region somewhere around 126 GeV. Further studies and more data from the LHC will tell us more about what it is that they have found, but only a linear collider will be able to tell without prejudice whether it’s a Standard Model Higgs (or not) and determine its mass with a precision down to about 60 MeV. Here’s how.

A new integration technology that could also be used in the ILC detectors will soon serve as a node point for connecting several German and international institutes and universities in the common goal to develop fast, efficient and reliable detector components in the Helmholtz Detector Technology and Systems Platform. The unusual aspect of the collaboration: these detectors are not only for Higgs- and SUSY-hunting apparatus for particle physics, but also for more compact and more targeted devices for use in light sources.

There’s no doubt that the life of a cavity is exciting – lots of power, whizzing particles, superconductivity, the lot. How does it get there, what are the stations of its life? A new photo series is in production that follows a cavity from niobium ingot to cryomodule, and an exhibition of these images opens next week at DESY in Germany.

Five shafts, pacmen shields and moving platforms: the design for the hall in which the ILC detectors will sit, be pushed and pulled, record data, get upgrades and maintenance is now final, at least for an ILC that is not built underneath mountains.

The AIDA community takes stock of its first year of R&D activities. Twenty-three European countries are working on a variety of infrastructures that help today's researchers plan the detectors of the future - from linear colliders to neutrino facilities.

In their unflagging quest to achieve higher gradients for the ILC, scientists in the 9-mA study programme at DESY’s FLASH facility develop a better knack for automating accelerator voltages, helping keep cavity gradients high and the whole system stable.
