The ILC Detailed Baseline Design report will contain a chapter that describes the physics opportunities that the ILC will offer. The LHC is bringing us new information about particles in the ILC energy range. But what exactly is the Large Hadron Collider telling us, and what are the implications for the ILC programme? Michael Peskin encourages members of the ILC community to debate this question and contribute to the report.

Few particles get as much attention today as the theorised Higgs boson, which so far has eluded detection. Whatever the outcome of the Large Hadron Collider's search for it - whether it finds a Higgs particle or not - there is still compelling physics that a future collider should explore.

How can a low-energy experiment like SLAC’s PEP II B Factory, originally built to investigate differences between matter and antimatter and no longer even taking data, compete with a monster matter masher like the LHC that was built, in a large part, to find the Higgs?

Physicists could be on their way to discovering the Higgs boson, if it exists, by next year. Scientists in two experiments at the Large Hadron Collider pleasantly surprised attendees at the European Physical Society conference this afternoon by both showing small hints of what could be the prized particle in the same area.

With the LHC up and running, some might imagine physicists just waiting for a Higgs boson to pop up in one of the four experiments, before publishing a paper and moving on to solve science’s next Big Mystery. However this picture is very far from the reality of experimental particle physics today, where results are based on statistics, statistics and yet more statistics.

Batavia, Ill.—New constraints on the elusive Higgs particle are more stringent than ever before. Scientists of the CDF and DZero collider experiments at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Fermilab revealed their latest Higgs search results today (July 26) at the International Conference on High Energy Physics, held in Paris from July 22-28. Their results rule out a significant fraction of the allowed mass range established by earlier experiments.
