A visit to the two candidate Japanese ILC sites

| 2 February 2012 On 17 and 18 January, several senior members of the ILC design team had the opportunity to visit the Japanese candidate sites. As reported in ILC NewsLine last month, the Japanese have identified two candidate sites for the ILC, one in southern and one in northern Japan. Today, I give my impressions following our visit to both sites. Category: Director's Corner | Tagged: , , , , , , ,

We’re ready for our close-up

26 January 2012 An NHK television news crew followed around ILC scientists for two days last week as they visited proposed sites for building the ILC in Japan. NHK's five-minute segment appeared on the 7 a.m. news, reaching an estimated 30 million homes. Scientists were excited to be part of the Japanese news media. Here, Global Design Effort Director Barry Barish addresses the camera as he explains the purpose of the ILC. Category: Image of the week | Tagged:

The capability for producing niobium sheets

| 26 January 2012 Japanese company Tokyo Denkai is boosting high-purity niobium production and processing with some new equipment and a better-outfitted shop. Should the ILC be built, the company will be able to handle the large order of niobium needed for accelerator cavities. Category: Around the World | Tagged: , , , , ,

| 19 December 2011 Prime Minister of Japan Yoshihiko Noda gave a speech at the ILC symposium held in Tokyo last Thursday on the ILC's potential to enrich our lives. Category: Around the World | Tagged: , , ,

ILC goes one step further

| 19 December 2011 The ILC has reached the point where the Japanese government is starting to consider it as a possible future project in the context of Japan's national policy. Category: Director's Corner | Tagged: , , , , ,

Japanese interest in hosting the ILC

| 19 December 2011 On behalf of my colleagues worldwide who have been working so hard to develop a design for the International Linear Collider, we enthusiastically welcome the Japanese expression of interest in hosting the ILC. We report in today’s special issue of NewsLine on a special high-level meeting addressing this subject that was held in Japan last week. The Japanese are very strong partners in the technical effort to develop a design for the ILC through the Global Design Effort. The GDE represents a unique global process to develop and make technical decisions for the technical design of such a very large international project through a worldwide organisation developing the design and coordinating the R&D programmes. As we approach our goal of producing a detailed ILC technical design, it is particularly timely and encouraging for us to learn of the Japanese interest in hosting the facility and to follow the unfolding early status reports from the CERN LHC on the Higgs searches. Japanese delegation explores European labs

8 December 2011 A delegation from the prefectures Fukuoka and Saga on the Japanese island Kyushu visited two European labs, CERN and DESY, last week to learn about existing research infrastructures and the labs' experiences with management, administration, local communication and a whole lot more. The region is one of two possible Japanese sites for the ILC, and the delegation, consisting of four members of the Fukuoka/Saga ILC planning committee, wanted to establish a dialogue with the European labs to exchange ideas and information. At DESY, they heard about DESY regional cooperation, socioeconomic impacts, innovation and technology transfer, outreach with local communities and of course DESY and the ILC. They also visited some facilities on campus, including the new accelerator module test hall for the European X-Ray Free-Electron laser XFEL, pictured here. Proposing a fishcake shape

| 27 October 2011 Kamaboko is a type of Japanese fishcake with a distinctive loaf shape, usually served sliced thin with dipping sauce such as soy sauce and wasabi or as a topping for noodles. It is also the shape of the newly proposed ILC tunnel design for an Asian mountain site. Category: Around the World | Tagged: , , ,

Japan Society for Promotion of Science supports ILC detector R&D

| 20 October 2011 The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science has made a new five-year award for ILC detector R&D. A kickoff meeting was held at Tohoku University in Sendai, Japan in September. The new award will support critical R&D on advanced particle detector techniques that are both central to ILC needs and have broader implications for science, technology and medicine. ILC detector R&D in Japan stays strong

| 22 September 2011 During the kick-off meeting for the global R&D programme of ILC detectors in Japan, roughly 60 scientists from all over the world gathered to discuss plans towards and beyond the Detailed Baseline Design Report and enjoyed visiting one of the two Japanese candidate sites for the ILC in Tohoku area.
