On 24 October, a symposium to boost activities to invite the ILC to Japan was held at Tokyo University, Tokyo, Japan. This event received great attention. One of the reason was CERN's Director-General Rolf Heuer's talk, which was delivered for the first time in Japan since the discovery of Higgs-like particle in July.

The former chair of the International Linear Collider Steering Committee and of the Asian Committee for Future Accelerators, Shin-ichi Kurokawa, has received the highest award that the People’s Republic of China gives to foreign experts: the Friendship Award of China. The awardees also met Prime Minister Wen Jiabao.

A week after the CERN’s announcement of the discovery of the Higgs-like particle, a group of experts in various field in Japan issued recommendations entitled Creation of Global Cities by hosting the International Linear Collider.

Two little visitors at show off the souvenirs they received at KEK's open house, held on Sunday, 2 September. The girl on the right was very happy to find a "Higgs" in her toy capsule given away at the ILC exhibit. Visitor numbers have increased dramatically from last year's open house, probably due to a special kind of Higgs mechanism that attracts the general public to particle physics.

The Japanese high-energy physics community has now published its recommendations in English. Their report strongly endorses two large-scale projects: an early realisation of a linear collider and a large-scale neutrino detector.

On 30 July, a report called "Science Frontier Kyushu" was presented in the eighth meeting of a study group in Kyushu, the southernmost island of Japan. This report is indicative of the prefectures' aim in urban development to build a new international science city, which could be a hub of science research in the 21st century.

On 10 July, governors, industrial leaders, and local officials of Japan’s northeastern area got together to attend a general meeting of the Tohoku Advanced Science and Technology Study Group. In the northeastern part of Japan, or Tohoku, activities towards inviting the ILC to the area has been intensified ever since the ILC was positioned as one of the promising means to recover from the disastrous earthquake occurred last year.

Particle cartoons, enticing images, animations and lots and lots of information – that’s what a new website dedicated to the ILC in Japan offers its visitors to help them learn more about the ILC and particle physics. Created by the Advanced Accelerator Association promoting science and technology, it went live on Monday this week.

Close to 80 scientists gathered at Kyushu University in Fukuoka, Japan for the ILD workshop held from 23 to 25 May. The workshop also drew interest from Japanese media, who attended press briefing and the tour around "the south site" for the ILC.

KEK's superconducting radiofrequency test facility, called STF, has graduated. No longer a test facility, it is now a fully fledged accelerator.
