The 2017 CERN-Latin-American School of High-Energy Physics will be held in San Juan del Rio, Mexico, from 8 to 21 March 2017. The deadline for applications is 18 November. The lectures will cover a broad range of HEP topics at a level suitable for students working for a PhD in experimental particle physics. Financial support may be available for Latin-American students attending the School. Although the School is targeted particularly at students from Latin-American countries, it is open to self-funding students coming from other regions.
Barbara Warmbein | 15 October 2015Probably the most advanced ultra-thin pixel sensors ever: DEPFET. Developed for the ILD detector’s vertex subdetector, they will be used in the Belle II detector – an extreme example of fast-forward technology spin-off. The first full-size module for use in Belle II has just been completed. It comprises a thin sensitive area (75 microns) with roughly 200,000 DEPFET pixels and the monolithically integrated silicon support frame with all necessary read-out electronics. Perrine Royole-Degieux | 1 February 2007At the heart of the massive ILC detector system, the vertex detector, a compact tracking device about the size of a wine bottle, surrounds the interaction region. This high-tech piece of equipment hosts about a billion pixels in total - equivalent to hundreds of the finest cameras. It works just like a 3-D camera because it measures the tracks of outgoing particles with micron precision. "Building and designing a vertex detector for the ILC is a real challenge," said Marc Winter, a physicist leading a micro-electronics group in IPHC, an IN2P3 Laboratory in Strasbourg, France. "This detector will reach fantastic performances, well beyond what was ever achieved so far."
