For their 4th edition, the French Linear Collider Days brought participants to Paris to review recent national development on accelerator, physics and detectors as well as to hear about the global progress of the project at the international level. The meeting was jointly organised by members of CEA/Irfu and IN2P3. Roman Pöschl, member of the organisation committee, summarises.

The direct detection of gravitational waves, announced today by the LIGO-VIRGO scientific collaborations, marks another great day in the history of fundamental research. It is the product of years of preparation, data taking and hard scientific work and provides just as many answers as new questions to physics. One man has witnessed the project’s history and its breakthrough first hand and provides his personal view of the story (and what it means for other science projects): former ILC Director Barry Barish.

The French Linear collider community organised its second “Linear Collider days” last November. The highlights of the meetings, summarised here by three of the organisers, show the diversity of the fields addressed the community and its expertise. The days ended with a special session dedicated to country reports where accelerator and detector activities in different continents were reviewed in the context of their possible future cooperation with France. It served as one of the building blocks in constructing European ILC Community.

Last month, a true tabletop electron accelerator was shown to the public for the first time during the CNRS exhibition Entrée en matière in Trocadéro's gardens in Paris, France. This model was built to serve as a general introduction to the understanding of the principles underlying accelerator operations in general and more specifically colliders. The public can actually see and manipulate the controls and therefore easily grasp what is happening. The model is a small replica of the Orsay storage ring (Anneau de Collision d’Orsay, ACO) at LAL. ACO was in service as a collider from 1965 to 1980 with an energy of 500 MeV for each beam. The real accelerator is now a museum, listed on the French heritage register. The France-China Particle Physics Laboratory is a lab without walls, enabling Chinese and French particle and accelerator scientists to work together towards the new energy frontier with experiments such as the LHC and the ILC. Its fourth annual workshop took place in Shandong University, Jinan, China from 7 to 9 April 2011.
