DESY and KEK are two labs that have a lot in common. They know a lot about accelerators, operated and have operated a number of them in their long and eventful histories. They are their countries’ hubs for particle physics research, but they also run accelerators for photon science. They are national labs that collaborate closely with other institutes and labs from around the world. And, notably, with each other. At the recent DESY KEK Workshop at DESY in Hamburg, Germany, the two therefore decided to extend the existing cooperation agreement by another five years.

Akira Yamamoto, Regional Director for Asia in the Linear Collider Collaboration, had to learn this week that ACFA isn’t what he thought it is. ACFA stands for Asian Committee for Future Accelerators, and contrary to what its name suggests it is an independent body, not a subgroup of the International Committee for Future Accelerators ICFA. He reports from their recent meeting in Kyoto, Japan.

A new integration technology that could also be used in the ILC detectors will soon serve as a node point for connecting several German and international institutes and universities in the common goal to develop fast, efficient and reliable detector components in the Helmholtz Detector Technology and Systems Platform. The unusual aspect of the collaboration: these detectors are not only for Higgs- and SUSY-hunting apparatus for particle physics, but also for more compact and more targeted devices for use in light sources.
