Mark Palmer brings CesrTA research to the ILC

| 24 February 2011 With his feet firmly planted on Cornell university ground and certain clouds permanently in his head, Mark Palmer is a key figure in the ILC's battle against an unwanted phenomenon called electron cloud. The CLIC workshop: a summary of results

| 2 April 2015 The annual CLIC workshop took place at CERN in January. The well attended meeting covered accelerator, detector and physics studies and highlighted a year of interesting results for CLIC, Steinar Stapnes, Associate Director for the Compact Linear Collider Study in the Linear Collider Collaboration, explains.

Want a Higgs factory? Damping rings are key

| 12 September 2013 The CesrTA collaboration at Cornell University, US, made important contributions to the design of the ILC damping rings for the recently completed Technical Design Report, including finding ways to reduce a phenomenon known as the electron cloud effect. Post-TDR, the collaboration is pursuing ways to make the damping rings even more effective by better understanding another phenomenon: intrabeam scattering. Mitigating electron cloud effects for the ILC

| 20 December 2012 One of the key objectives of the ILC R&D programme during the Technical Design Phase has been to characterise electron cloud effects in an ILC-like low-emittance positron damping ring and to test proposed mitigation techniques. The centerpiece of our efforts has been the CesrTA programme that involved reconfiguring it as an ILC-like low emittance ring and instrumenting it to carry out these studies. CesrTA has been a highly successful experimental programme, leading to reliable mitigation strategies for the ILC positron damping rings. Category: Director's Corner | Tagged: , , ,

A crucial technical review

| 2 August 2012 In May, the GDE underwent its most recent technical review, just before embarking on the task of assembling the Technical Design Report (TDR). The review covered the status of the key ILC R&D, the TDR baseline, the outline and plans for the TDR, and a look to the future. Category: Director's Corner | Tagged: , , , ,

After the TDR: what’s next for ILC?

| 28 June 2012 New machines set new challenges for accelerator experts, and there are a number of challenges that the ILC R&D team has had to face before sitting down to write a convincing Technical Design Report. Beam test facilities in all regions have delivered and are still delivering important results. Project Manager Marc Ross takes stock. Category: Director's Corner | Tagged: , , ,

Technical baseline reviews: damping rings

| 1 September 2011 As part of the process of developing the ILC technical design, the GDE project managers have initiated a set of technical baseline reviews of major subsystems. The first of those reviews on the ILC damping rings was carried out in July in Frascati, Italy. Category: Director's Corner | Tagged: , , , , ,

PAC meeting in Taiwan: accelerator recommendations

| 14 July 2011 The ILC Program Advisory Committee met at Academia Sinica in Taiwan in May. They made a set of specific comments and recommendations regarding the accelerator R&D programme and GDE plans and progress towards a Technical Design Report. What did we accomplish last year?

| 20 January 2011 The ILC is still very much a dream and the path to a real project remains highly uncertain, even though the scientific case is as strong as ever and we continue to meet all our highest priority goals. Hopefully, the world political and economic climate will improve before too long and there will once again be receptiveness to major investments in large-scale basic science projects. It is hard to imagine that we have seen the last of such projects; therefore our strategy is to be as prepared as possible to make a strong proposal for a linear collider when the time is right. Keeping that ultimate goal in mind, how are we doing and what did we accomplish in 2010? In fact, in my opinion, last year was a banner year for the Global Design Effort! Electron-Cloud physics

| 11 November 2010 [...] For the ILC, electron cloud effects can defocus the positron beam in the damping rings, thereby degrading the ability to create a low-emittance beam, a key in creating the required very small final beam spot. Category: Director's Corner | Tagged: , ,
