About Brian Foster
European Director in the LCC
Brian Foster | 8 September 2016
Among the LCC collaboration changes that will be put in place as of January 2017 will be the abolition of the Regional Directors. In this week’s corner, Brian Foster, soon-to-be former-European Director, explains what he has learned in 14 years of dedication towards managing the linear collider project, and gives some advice for the future.

As demonstrated again by the Tesla Technology Collaboration meeting last month at SLAC National Laboratory, no other future particle physics project has ever been so well understood both technologically and from the industrial mass production side than the ILC, reports European Regional Director Brian Foster. Foster also attended a one-off meeting with key players in plasma-wave acceleration - another possible collider for the future - where superconducting radiofrequency acceleration may also play a vital role.

European Regional Director Brian Foster is very pleased that this years’ Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to two particle physicists. Neutrinos had long been a complete puzzle, and the (improbable but true) discovery that they oscillate is an excellent example of the importance of experiments. The ILC can continue this tradition.

I am sure that my readers will remember that in my last Director’s Corner, in April, I threatened to write at some future date about the new Project Implementation Planning (PIP) document. Those of you with an even longer memory, going back to my Director’s Corner of April 2014, may even remember what it is. Just in case, however, I take this opportunity not only to honour my promise of last April to also to refresh your memory and to offer you an opportunity to peruse the final document.

For the first Programme Advisory Committee meeting of the Linear Collider Collaboration, experts from all over the world gathered in France to review the status of the LCC and progress since the completion of the Technical Design Report in 2013. The committee was impressed by the progress both on the machine and the detectors. Brian Foster, European Director in the LCC, reports about the details.

Russia's Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) in is an international organisation with a long and wide scientific programme, embracing both nuclear and particle physics. Brian Foster, European Director in the Linear Collider Collaboration embracing both nuclear and particle physics. Brian Foster, European Director in the Linear Collider Collaboration visited the lab for the third time and met with the directorate, addressing options for exploring Russian engagement in possible future ILC construction, for which the lab has a lively interest.

The Linear Collider school, a week of intense lectures and discussions on all things linear, has just taken place at lake Chiemsee in Germany, switching from its former venue in the UK’s Lake District to Bavaria. Brian Foster, European Director in the Linear Collider Collaboration, was one of the lecturers and reports about exotic PhDs and linear collider news from a monastic setting.

Now that there are great hopes that Japan will soon step forward with a proposal to host the ILC, the time has come for the Linear Collider Collaboration to take another look at issues related to ILC governance. Brian Foster, European director for the Linear Collider Collaboration, has just been appointed chair of the subcommittee in charge of producing recommendations on the organisation and management of an ILC lab in Japan.

At a meeting in France in November, ILC experts in both detector and accelerator technologies discussed project and funding opportunities for the upcoming EU Horizon2020 framework programme. LCC European Director Brian Foster also took the opportunity to visit the European-XFEL village at CEA in Saclay which has produced a cryomodule that exceeds ILC requirements.
