The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) team at CERN are investigating the potential of a new kind of particle accelerator, and to help them they are simulating their designs using grid resources, such the UK computing grid for particle physics, GridPP. They build a customised version of the DIRAC system, called ILCDirac, a grid environment for both CLIC and similar experiments which is aimed at benefitting the entire linear collider community. The Funding Agencies for Large Colliders (FALC), an informal group of agency representatives met at CERN on 6 October. FALC is constituted to improve the possibilities for international cooperation in high-energy physics by understanding the planning processes in the funding agencies, exchanging information on plans and statuses of projects in different countries or regions and preparing for cooperation on future particle physics facilities. Highlights of this FALC meeting included discussion of plans for the ILC and more generally for lepton colliders following completion of the ILC Technical Design Report, as well as discussions of plans for the European Strategy Update just getting underway.

Earlier this month Jean-Pierre Delahaye retired as CERN's CLIC Study Leader. A reception was held in his honour at CERN.

Linear collider detector developers inside and outside CERN are tackling the next generation of detector technology. While their focus has centred on high-energy linear collider detectors, their innovative concepts and designs will be applicable to any future detector.

The year 2012 will be a crucial one for particle physics. Physicists expect the Large Hadron Collider and astroparticle physics experiments to draw a clearer picture of the field so that, at the end of the year, the CERN Council could vote on an update of the European strategy for particle physics and, in this way, announce Europe’s top priorities for the five years to follow.

Lowering power consumption is a key issue for particle physicists to solve to design the next generation of collider experiments. Detectors will measure signals recorded in millions of readout channels. Last May, the ILC-CLIC common working group for detectors organised the first workshop on power pulsing and delivery at LAL in Orsay, France.

Though the road ahead is long, the ILC collaboration has made considerable strides designing the machine and its two detectors, contributing to the advancement of other fields and bringing together a global community. Now we must keep up the energy for the remaining stretch as we fulfil our mandate to deliver its technical design.

A freshly released report from the ILC-CLIC working group on general issues summarises general issues and synergies involving a future a linear collider. It also discusses plans for the ILC and CLIC efforts to identify common issues regarding siting, technical issues and project planning.

In a hall for test beam experiments at CERN, next to the CLOUD climate experiment and an irradiation facility, sits a detector prototype that is in many ways a first. It's the first ever hadronic sandwich calorimeter (HCal) prototype made of tungsten. It's the first prototype for a detector for the Compact Linear Collider Study CLIC, developed by the linear collider detector R&D group (LCD group) at CERN. And it's the first piece of hardware that results directly from the cooperation between CLIC and ILC detector study groups. Now its makers are keen to see first particle showers in their detector.
