Some 100 cavity and photo enthusiasts came to DESY last Wednesday to hear Karsten Büßer talk about "Cool Runnings" and see the picture story of cavities in the making by science photographer Heiner Müller-Elsner. The exhibition will be on show at DESY for a few more weeks. Read more here.

What do huge sailing ships, science and India have in common? They were all present at this year's celebrations for the birthday of Hamburg's harbour. This year's special guest country was India, and as DESY has strong links with India especially in the field of photon science, DESY put up a tent in the harbour and presented itself, its science and its Indian scientists to the more than one million visitors.

In their unflagging quest to achieve higher gradients for the ILC, scientists in the 9-mA study programme at DESY’s FLASH facility develop a better knack for automating accelerator voltages, helping keep cavity gradients high and the whole system stable.

DESY's synchrotron radiation source DORIS has helped settle a decades-old question of whether van Gogh painted the 1886 Still life with meadow flowers. Using macro scanning X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, scientists were able to analyse the canvas's layers of paint with greater detail than had been possible previously. Earlier X-ray analyses had shown that a painter - suspected to be van Gogh - had painted a scene of two wrestlers on the canvas before painting the flower still life over it several months later. DESY's work revealed even more, in particular, the color palette the painter used for the two wrestlers and their relative state of dress. Both attributes helped authenticate the work as a van Gogh. A beam of particles (figuratively) painted a picture of greater detail. Read the DESY press release

Visitors ramble where electrons will one day whizz: a large number of people working at DESY and the European XFEL were treated to a rare trip underground into the recently completed but still completely empty tunnel for the European XFEL. And empty tunnels make for good images. Read more about the European-XFEL tunnel

Ten members from the Japanese Society for Civil Engineering’s committee for civil works for future ILC facilities came to Europe in February to look at current civil engineering projects like CERN’s LINAC4 and the European XFEL in Hamburg and to discuss administrative challenges. By the end of March next year, the committee will publish draft guidelines on civil solutions for a potential ILC in Japan.

The international community of theorists and experimentalists working on ILC and CLIC is convinced of the strong physics case for a generic linear collider. More than one hundred of them gathered at DESY last week for three days of intense discussions and review of the different physics scenarios. Two papers are now under way and will be finalised by this summer. In the meantime the input from the whole particle physics community will be very welcome.

The world’s fastest (and shortest) movie has superconducting radiofrequency technology to thank for its entry into the Guinness Book of World Records. Shot at DESY’s FLASH X-ray laser, which accelerates electrons in much the same way as the ILC will, it shows a micro model of the German Brandenburg Gate at an interval of a mere 50 femtoseconds between two frames. A group of European physicists, the PLUME collaboration, aims to prototype an ultra-light device intended to equip one of the thinnest and lightest elements at the inner heart of the ILC detectors: the vertex detector. At CERN one month ago, a full-scale prototype equipped with CMOS pixel sensors was successfully tested in beam.
