Wish you were in Iwate for last LCWS2016 workshop? Here are some impressions of Iwate, proposed region for the International Linear Collider. More than 320 participants from around the world gathered for one week to discuss the latest R&D developments, the linear collider physics case, detectors and accelerators and project management updates for the linear collider. Scientists were warmly welcomed by an enthusiastic local community of ILC supporters. They were also honoured by the presence and speeches of distinguished guests from the Japanese Federation of Diet Members and Iwate officials. - View slideshow - Lost in Tohoku? The mayor of Ichinoseki city, Osamu Katsube, and the whole city sent a special gift to CERN for its for its 60th birthday, which it celebrated in 2014: a red chanchanko set. It consists of a red vest, hat and folding fan. "'Kanreki' is one of the ancient traditions of celebrating longevity. It is held to celebrate the long life and health of someone who has reached a certain age and to pray for their continued health. This age is 60 years," the mayor explains in the accompanying letter. "We wish CERN further progress with its motto 'Science for Peace'." Find out more about the tradition

The life of a particle physicist is the same everywhere in the world one might say. It’s true that the physicist’s work life at the future ILC is easily predictable. Computing and data taking or analysis, meeting with colleagues, tons of coffee and tea, short lunch breaks at the cafeteria (with “electron” and “positron” menus?), preparing for future meetings in the afternoon, plus, for the lucky ones, night shifts for a detector or machine survey. I’m not going to tell you anything new about what you know already. Let me tell you the other side of the story, regarding your afterwork life at the Kitakami site. Put on your most comfy easy-to-take-off shoes – there is much to visit here - and follow me to the Tohoku region.
