Tokyo, 15 December. The draft of the Technical Design Report (TDR) for the planned International Linear Collider ILC was handed over to Jonathan Bagger, the chair of the International Linear Collider Steering Committee (ILCSC), at an official ceremony in Tokyo, Japan, on 15 December. This draft is the product of many years of research and development and a series of in-depth technical reviews for the ILC, the potential next-generation particle collider to complement and advance beyond the physics of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. The handing over of the TDR draft marks the ILC's major step towards the completion of its final design.

The Japan association of high-energy physicists has published a proposal of “phased execution” for the International Linear Collider which was accepted by the Japanese high-energy physics community. The so-called phased execution or staged approach is the plan to build a shorter ILC accelerator than the one designed in the ILC TDR, as a first step of the project.

On 24 October, a symposium to boost activities to invite the ILC to Japan was held at Tokyo University, Tokyo, Japan. This event received great attention. One of the reason was CERN's Director-General Rolf Heuer's talk, which was delivered for the first time in Japan since the discovery of Higgs-like particle in July.

A team of two scientists and four students from Shinshu University of Japan and Kyungpook National University of Korea have just packed up their cables, laptops and scintillator strips and left a test beam at DESY with many interesting results in their luggage. They tested the scintillator-strip-based electromagnetic calorimeter (ScECAL), one of the potential layers of a future ILC detector.

Drivers stuck in a traffic jam in Ichinoseki city are more likely to wonder about the mysteries of the Universe than about the latest Hollywood movie - at least if they take in the billboards at the side of the road. Japan's Iwate prefecture in the Tohoku region in the north of the country boasts a road sign underlining the region's interest in hosting the ILC.

The former chair of the International Linear Collider Steering Committee and of the Asian Committee for Future Accelerators, Shin-ichi Kurokawa, has received the highest award that the People’s Republic of China gives to foreign experts: the Friendship Award of China. The awardees also met Prime Minister Wen Jiabao.

Some 500 particle physicists from Europe and beyond met in Cracow, Poland, in September to kick-start the update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics, an initiative by the CERN Council that sets the European pace for global planning and cooperation on future projects in particle physics around the world. With the recent discovery of the Higgs-like particle at the LHC, a Higgs factory is high up on the wish list.

A week after the CERN’s announcement of the discovery of the Higgs-like particle, a group of experts in various field in Japan issued recommendations entitled Creation of Global Cities by hosting the International Linear Collider.

Two little visitors at show off the souvenirs they received at KEK's open house, held on Sunday, 2 September. The girl on the right was very happy to find a "Higgs" in her toy capsule given away at the ILC exhibit. Visitor numbers have increased dramatically from last year's open house, probably due to a special kind of Higgs mechanism that attracts the general public to particle physics.

The Japanese high-energy physics community has now published its recommendations in English. Their report strongly endorses two large-scale projects: an early realisation of a linear collider and a large-scale neutrino detector.
