Test facility at KEK becomes an accelerator

| 26 April 2012 KEK's superconducting radiofrequency test facility, called STF, has graduated. No longer a test facility, it is now a fully fledged accelerator. Category: Around the World | Tagged: , , , , ,

ILC beyond the technical design

| 8 March 2012 Realising a big international project such as International Linear Collider involves many issues beyond finalising the technical design. The Advanced Accelerator Association promoting science and technology, Japan's industry-academia collaboration towards the realisation of the ILC, recently published a report to address such issues. Japanese civil engineers dig deep in Europe

, and | 1 March 2012 Ten members from the Japanese Society for Civil Engineering’s committee for civil works for future ILC facilities came to Europe in February to look at current civil engineering projects like CERN’s LINAC4 and the European XFEL in Hamburg and to discuss administrative challenges. By the end of March next year, the committee will publish draft guidelines on civil solutions for a potential ILC in Japan. Category: Around the World | Tagged: , , , ,

Japanese civil engineers visit DESY and CERN

| 16 February 2012 A delegation from the Japanese Society of Civil Engineering visited the European labs CERN and DESY this month to learn about how the laboratories run their projects. Category: Image of the week | Tagged: , , ,

A visit to the two candidate Japanese ILC sites

| 2 February 2012 On 17 and 18 January, several senior members of the ILC design team had the opportunity to visit the Japanese candidate sites. As reported in ILC NewsLine last month, the Japanese have identified two candidate sites for the ILC, one in southern and one in northern Japan. Today, I give my impressions following our visit to both sites. Category: Director's Corner | Tagged: , , , , , , ,

We’re ready for our close-up

26 January 2012 An NHK television news crew followed around ILC scientists for two days last week as they visited proposed sites for building the ILC in Japan. NHK's five-minute segment appeared on the 7 a.m. news, reaching an estimated 30 million homes. Scientists were excited to be part of the Japanese news media. Here, Global Design Effort Director Barry Barish addresses the camera as he explains the purpose of the ILC. Category: Image of the week | Tagged:

The capability for producing niobium sheets

| 26 January 2012 Japanese company Tokyo Denkai is boosting high-purity niobium production and processing with some new equipment and a better-outfitted shop. Should the ILC be built, the company will be able to handle the large order of niobium needed for accelerator cavities. Category: Around the World | Tagged: , , , , ,

Japanese interest in hosting the ILC

| 19 December 2011 On behalf of my colleagues worldwide who have been working so hard to develop a design for the International Linear Collider, we enthusiastically welcome the Japanese expression of interest in hosting the ILC. We report in today’s special issue of NewsLine on a special high-level meeting addressing this subject that was held in Japan last week. The Japanese are very strong partners in the technical effort to develop a design for the ILC through the Global Design Effort. The GDE represents a unique global process to develop and make technical decisions for the technical design of such a very large international project through a worldwide organisation developing the design and coordinating the R&D programmes. As we approach our goal of producing a detailed ILC technical design, it is particularly timely and encouraging for us to learn of the Japanese interest in hosting the facility and to follow the unfolding early status reports from the CERN LHC on the Higgs searches.
