The anniversary of the announcement of the Higgs discovery (which happened on 4 July 2012) was hard to miss at CERN this year. People braced waiting times of more than 30 minutes to have a taste of discovery: the specially created Higgs pizza! Two shoots of asparagus (proton beams) collide in the middle of the pizza to create a Higgs boson that then decays. For carnivores, the chorizo Higgs decays into two two high-energy photons made of salami alongside some charged ham and neutral olive particles; vegetarians ate the decay of a tomato Higgs into four pepper muons.

You cannot miss that there was a big linear collider meeting last week: the Director's Corner gives a summary of results and the Feature highlights a key decision taken during the workshop. Fermilab, SLAC, JLab, Brookhaven, Argonne... these are all major players in particle physics and accelerator R&D. They are also the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) "national labs". All national research labs came to Washington, D.C. on 20 April to show their work to members of Congress and other visitors. Pictured is Dick Durbin, Illinois senator, giving his address. DOE has 17 national laboratories that address a variety of scientific and technological challenges to energy, environmental and national security. The laboratories employ more than 30,000 scientists, engineers and support staff in 19 states, and operate major scientific facilities for the benefit of the nation’s research and development community.

Iwate Prefecture in Japan is advertising the attractions of its region in four Tokyo subway lines. It proudly presents the world heritage site of Hiraizumi – as well as its possible future attraction, the ILC! Some things are more likely to happen in Japan than in any other country...

A crucial component of the European XFEL has taken up operation: The so-called injector, the 45-metre long first part of the superconducting particle accelerator, has accelerated its first electrons to nearly the speed of light. This is the first beam ever accelerated at the European XFEL and represents a major advancement toward the completion of the facility. The X-ray laser European XFEL is an international research facility in northern Germany that will produce ultrabright X-ray laser flashes for unprecedented studies of the nanocosmos. It consists of a 2-kilometre long superconducting linear electron accelerator, followed by a series of highly precise magnets to produce the highly brilliant X-ray laser light.

Members of Fermilab's Technical Division are working on superconducting radio-frequency cavities that are shaped like squatty beads on straight string. These prone, uniformly bulging tubes accelerate the particle beams that shoot through their hollow insides. The team recently achieved a record-high quality factor with a fully dressed cavity for a SLAC-headed project, Linac Coherent Light Source II.
