The Japan Society of Civil Engineers has just completed a guideline report for the civil engineering of the International Linear Collider, based on a five-year investigation. This report will enable the best and most cost-effective construction of the ILC. Adapted to the Japanese candidate site, this document will be effective for the construction of ILC at any overseas sites, and also useful to other future large-scale underground constructions.

Sixteen thousand – that’s the number of the superconducting radiofrequency (SCRF) accelerating cavities needed to build the 500-Giga-electronvolt linear collider. The fabrications of these 16 000 cavities will be divided between the three regions of Europe, the Americas, and Asia. This week, encouraging news about SCRF cavity fabrication came from Asia.

With the creation of a new ILC Planning Office this week at KEK, the Japanese high-energy physics community is taking another big step towards making the ILC a reality in Japan. It is the pre-step for forming an international organisation, which KEK Director General Atsuto Suzuki would like to establish.

Despite the largest typhoon in the year approaching, about 300 people braved the elements and gathered at a conference hall at University of Tokyo on 15 October. A symposium entitled “Can the ILC solve the mystery of the Universe?” was held, with representatives from the Linear Collider Collaboration (LCC) and specialists from various fields.

A committee of Japanese scientists has just recommended Kitakami mountains as a candidate construction site for the ILC. The project now has to go through international negotiations, which should take at least a few years. Meanwhile, on 28 August, Japan’s Ministry in charge of science policy (MEXT) delivered its first official national budget request for the ILC. The ILC project has now entered into the next stage.

The ILC site evaluation committee of Japan announced the result of the assessment on the two candidate sites in Japan on 23 August 2013. As a location, they recommended the Kitakami mountains in the Iwate and Miyagi prefectures.

The site evaluation committee of Japan, set up under the Japan ILC Strategy Council, will hold a press conference on 23 August 2013, at 9:30 a.m. (Japan Standard Time) to announce the site selected as candidate site for the ILC. The press conference will be streamed live.

On 15 March, scientists working on the Quantum Beam Technology Program at KEK’s superconducting RF test facility (STF) confirmed the successful generation of X-rays using Inverse Compton Scattering (ICS) with superconducting radiofrequency (SCRF) acceleration technology. This is the world’s first successful implementation of ICS X-ray sources with SCRF technology.

Twelve members of the Japanese Federation of Diet members to promote the realisation of the ILC visited KEK on 4 and 18 March. They spent the longest time at ATF, KEK's test facility for the linear collider. They also toured KEKB, Belle, and the Photon Factory.
