For their 4th edition, the French Linear Collider Days brought participants to Paris to review recent national development on accelerator, physics and detectors as well as to hear about the global progress of the project at the international level. The meeting was jointly organised by members of CEA/Irfu and IN2P3. Roman Pöschl, member of the organisation committee, summarises.

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the largest and most powerful particle accelerator in the world, has started to get ready for its second three-year run. Cool down of the vast machine has already begun in preparation for research to resume early in 2015 following a long technical stop to prepare the machine for running at almost double the energy of run 1. The last LHC magnet interconnection was closed on 18 June 2014 and one sector of 1/8 of the machine has already been cooled to operating temperature. The accelerator chain that supplies the LHC’s particle beams is currently starting up, with beam in the proton synchrotron accelerator last Wednesday for the first time since 2012.

Having just returned from a three-day meeting of civil engineers, accelerator designers, integration experts and linear collider management at the University of Tokyo, Mike Harrison, ILC Director in the Linear Collider Collaboration, reports on the progress. It turned out that even if the ILC is built in stages, which is a popular model with many, all the major civil engineering facilities would have to be completed in phase one of the project.

A new stage show based on accelerators and accelerator physics is taking off in Germany this month. Conceived by two ILC scientists at DESY, it shows the basic ingredients of a particle accelerator, complete with all the fun stuff, to schoolchildren ages 12 and up. It even gives a live audience-involving demonstration of the fundamental acceleration principle of the ILC.
