Things that start out in fundamental research quite regularly find their way into fields other than high energy physics. Take the Compact Linear Collider study CLIC, for example. CLIC's unique requirements have led to the development of a new high-gradient "X-band" acceleration technology that is attracting the interest of researchers working at light sources, in the medical sector and even art museums.

Learning to stabilise a particle beam of longer pulses such as those needed for the ILC requires diligence, patience and practice. ILC and FLASH scientists share the fruits of all three at the recent workshop on long bunch trains.

The SLAC BAW was the second and last such workshop of the so-called Top Level Change Control (TLCC) process, which has been going on for the last twelve months. The SLAC BAW focused on the two remaining TLCC themes: a reduced beam-power parameter set and the location and layout of the positron source.
