The Nobel Prize in Physics this year has gone to François Englert and Peter Higgs for their theoretical discovery of the Higgs mechanism, recently confirmed through the discovery of the predicted fundamental particle, by the ATLAS and CMS experiments at CERN's LHC. The linear collider community, represented by Deputy LCC Director Hitoshi Murayama, congratulates the two theorists on this appropriate award for the monumental work.

CERN congratulates François Englert and Peter W. Higgs on the award of the Nobel prize in physics “for the theoretical discovery of a mechanism that contributes to our understanding of the origin of mass of subatomic particles, and which recently was confirmed through the discovery of the predicted fundamental particle, by the ATLAS and CMS experiments at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider.” The announcement by the ATLAS and CMS experiments took place on 4 July last year.

Waiting for his plane after an intense and productive Snowmass meeting with more than 700 participants in Minneapolis, Hitoshi Murayama reports that the scientific opportunities and aspirations discussed at the meeting seem to lead to basic community consensus. The hunt for the identity of the Higgs adds momentum.

The European Linear Collider workshop, taking place in Hamburg from 27 to 31 May, coincides with very many important strategic processes at Japan, Europe and US, all of them nourished by the optimistic results from the LHC. Juan Fuster, chair of the workshop programme committee, explains the scientific and political context of the meeting.

The Moriond conference, one of the most central physics conferences where latest results are presented to the community, is in full swing. Yesterday, Wednesday, was entirely dedicated to "The SM Scalar boson" - or, in other words, the new particle discovered at the LHC. Both the CMS and ATLAS experiments presented their latest results, and its seems that the new particle is compatible with a Higgs boson. The summer conferences will see even more updates - and maybe a confirmation? Last year was an especially exciting year for particle physics with the discovery of a 126-GeV particle that appears to be the long-sought Higgs boson. This event is likely to be the most important discovery in decades: the observation of a new kind of particle that signals the mechanism for creating mass in the universe. These impressive early results already point to future directions for the LHC, and more broadly for particle physics. In fact, closer to home, this discovery is providing strong motivation for a Japanese initiative for a staged approach to the ILC, beginning with a ~250 GeV Higgs factory, with the capability of increasing the energy in the longer term.

According to the Standard Model, the mass of the Higgs boson should be enormous. But recent experimental results suggest it’s quite small, indicating that scientists might need to go beyond the Standard Model to explain the new particle.

Two little visitors at show off the souvenirs they received at KEK's open house, held on Sunday, 2 September. The girl on the right was very happy to find a "Higgs" in her toy capsule given away at the ILC exhibit. Visitor numbers have increased dramatically from last year's open house, probably due to a special kind of Higgs mechanism that attracts the general public to particle physics.
