Over the last 15 years, Japanese support for the realisation of the International Linear Collider has grown. People of all stripes —academics, members of industry, artists and everyday science fans—have banded together to voice their support for the building the ILC in Japan. The latest in this wave of support is the formation of a new committee, which recently reported on an impressive set of efforts to promote the ILC, says Andy Lankford, regional representative for the Americas in the International Development Team IDT.

The US and Japan work together on a long list of projects in high-energy physics, from current experiments to future plans. At an annual meeting of the “Joint Committee” in Japan, four new projects were added to the list of joint activities, and Harry Weerts, regional director for the Americas, reports that he sees progress on ILC work in Japan, but that US authorities are waiting for a sign from their Japanese counterparts before the project can go ahead.

Right after the Asian Linear Collider Workshop (ALCW) 2015 and ILC Tokyo Event, another big milestone for the ILC happened in the United States. From 26 to 30 April, three members of the Diet and members of Japan’s Federation of Diet Members for Promotion of the ILC, Takeo Kawamura, Ryu Shionoya and Shun-ichi Suzuki visited Washington D.C., to meet with their American counterparts to discuss the ILC.

After the release of the European Strategy for Particle Physics last year, the strategy process in the US is also being finalised. The Particle Physics Project Prioritization Panel (P5) was put together and charged by the High Energy Physics Advisory Panel (HEPAP) to create a “10 year strategic plan in context of a 20 year global vision” for the US programme. The complete committee report was presented to HEPAP today and discussions about its content are ongoing. The P5 roadmap outlines a broad particle physics programme for the US, including strong endorsements for the ILC in Japan.

The US Department of Energy High Energy Physics Advisory Panel is currently in the process of updating the 2008 US High Energy Physics roadmap. The Committee will produce a draft report by early March 2014 and a final report by May. Mike Harrison, Associate Director for the International Linear Collider, explains the context and possible outcome, for the ILC, of this roadmap.

From the output of the "Snowmass" meeting, US particle physicists will chart a path to answering some of science’s most intriguing questions. More than 600 particle physicists from nearly 100 universities and laboratories came together on the University of Minnesota's Minneapolis campus to enumerate the field's most pressing scientific questions and contemplate the experiments needed to answer them.

It's suit and tie time when high-level US and Japanese science planners meet. At the US-Japan Advanced Science and Technology Symposium, held on 30 April in Washington DC, leaders from government, academia and industry met to discuss US-Japan cooperation in science and technology, using the ILC as an example. Learn more in the next issue of LC NewsLine. On the left is a Daniel B. Poneman, Deputy Secretary of Energy, and on the right Takeo Kawamura, Member of the Lower House and Chair of the Federation of Diet members in support of the ILC.
