Photograph: Cindy Arnold Happy New Year! Perhaps this year will bring a discovery resembling the event being depicted on this bright, bursting-with-energy quilt. Artist Susan Jackan fused and machine-embroidered this quilted depiction of a Higgs event, titled The Heart of the Matter. Stitched and fabric art works of scientific scenes, phenomena and ideas are currently on display in the exhibit Stitched Together: Art and Science at the Fermilab Art Gallery.

Fermilab will soon begin operating CM2, a significant advancement in work on superconducting radiofrequency research that will serve the ILC community and Fermilab in building and operating future accelerators.

The Illinois Accelerator Research Center, or IARC, will provide a state-of-the-art facility for accelerator research, education and industrialisation. Located on the Fermilab campus, near Chicago in the US, the new building will house 42,000 square feet of offices, technical and educational space for scientists and engineers from Fermilab, Argonne, local universities and industrial partners. On 30 September, LCWS11 was winding down in Granada, Spain. On the other side of the world, the Tevatron shut down after 28 years of operation. Fermilab celebrated the life of the collider with a lab-wide ceremony and party.

The Tevatron again and again did the impossible. It was the world’s first superconducting synchrotron. It required the development of the world’s most intense, consistent source of antiprotons. It eventually operated 300 times beyond its original design capabilities.

The Fermilab Tevatron will be turned off later this month after having served the high-energy community for 25 years as the highest-energy collider in the world. The contributions of the Tevatron have been enormous, both from its many physics results and from its leading role in developing the science and technology of high-energy hadron colliders.

Accelerator cavities have their faults, and some pits and cracks hide deep in the walls or in out-of-the-way places where they aren’t easily found. Accelerator researchers help improve flawed cavities by taking their fault-finding missions beneath the cavity surface with X-ray computed tomography.

A stable particle beam needs a trouble-free path on its way to high energies, and that means providing it with a smooth gradient to ascend. A team of scientists at Fermilab has arrived at a way to control accelerating cavities so they can give particle beams exactly that – a tilt-free path to collision.

Cryomodule 1 at Fermilab is now being powered as a complete, multi-cavity instrument. Scientists will subject it to superconducting radiofrequency tests over the coming weeks.

Physicists could be on their way to discovering the Higgs boson, if it exists, by next year. Scientists in two experiments at the Large Hadron Collider pleasantly surprised attendees at the European Physical Society conference this afternoon by both showing small hints of what could be the prized particle in the same area.
