From Fermilab: Collaboration between Fermilab, Indian institutions sets stage for future accelerators

26 February 2009 INDORE, India (February 10, 2009) - The Department of Energy’s Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, Ill., today announced the signing of a new Memorandum of Understanding with four Indian institutions. The MOU establishes collaboration in the areas of superconducting acceleration science and technology and in research and development of superconducting materials. From symmetry breaking: Project X collaboration forms, experiment moves forward

15 January 2009 Project X, a Fermilab-hosted international accelerator facility, could break ground as soon as 2013. Category: Around the World | Tagged: , ,

Harmonics of acceleration

| 8 January 2009 The majority of NewsLine readers are scientists – most of you of the experimental kind. So be honest: how often during the last few weeks, when listening to carols, plucking the strings of your old guitar that you only get out during the holidays or cringing at a dissonant brass band, did you think about the physics and the maths of music? Go to the ILCT-MDB Horizontal Test Stand at Fermilab now and you can experience a perfect third harmonic: that of a string of cavities being tested and assembled into a cryomodule. Pixel collaboration

13 November 2008 Plans are taking shape to form a new group to coordinate and stimulate R&D on monolithic and vertically integrated pixel detectors for scientific applications in high-energy physics and beyond. In a joint message, the directorates of CERN, KEK and Fermilab have offered their support. They suggested the formation of a regionally balanced coordination board to take this forward. From discussions in recent reviews and workshops, we think there is an opportunity for the many efforts underway worldwide to benefit a larger community. We already have strong collaborations for the development of vertical integration and monolithic active pixel sensors (MAPS). The new world-wide effort would build upon the existing collaborations and open the technology developments to other scientific areas. We will discuss how best to achieve this at upcoming meetings. Our suggestions will then be comunicated to the directorates of CERN, KEK and Fermilab. Category: Feature | Tagged: , , , , ,

World beam test tour at Fermilab

| 2 October 2008 The International Linear Collider requires a detector with excellent performance to fully exploit its physics potential. In order to meet this challenge, significant improvements in the calorimetric performance are needed compared to previous generations of detectors, and new technologies and techniques are being developed. To test those technologies and techniques with particle beams, scientists are travelling around the world, to where beamlines with particle beams for tests are available. First cryomodule moves into NML

| 14 August 2008 Good news from an experimental hall at the edge of the prairie: Fermilab's ILC test area in the 'New Muon Lab' (NML) has just taken a major step towards completion with the installation of the first cryomodule on 6 August. Category: Around the World | Tagged: , ,

From Fermilab Today: Citizens’ task force delivers recommendations

19 June 2008 When Fermilab reached out to neighbors five years ago to engage community members in laboratory decision making, some people in science and some neighbors doubted it would work. Category: Around the World | Tagged: , ,

From Fermilab Today: Students report on the importance, design of proposed linear collider

22 May 2008 To teach 35 eighth-graders about particle physics, Batavia Rotolo Middle School teachers Macy Felter and Elizabeth Selander had them study the ILC, the proposed next-generation particle accelerator. Category: Around the World | Tagged: , ,

Globalising R&D

| 15 May 2008 The coordination of superconducting radiofrequency R&D is central to the Global Design Effort's mission of bringing the design for the ILC to the point we can make a robust proposal to our governments. Category: Director's Corner | Tagged: , , , , , , , ,

From Fermilab Today: Fermilab welcomes CALICE to Test Beam facility

8 May 2008 One of Fermilab's most distinct buildings now has a new resident. Last month, members of the CALICE collaboration moved their calorimeters into the newly renovated Meson Test Beam Facility. They will test the calorimeters with low- and high-energy particle beams during the next two years. Category: Feature | Tagged: , ,
