A time of transition, or When men and mountains meet

and | 21 February 2013 Today represents a crossroads in the global efforts towards a linear collider. We are officially making the transition from the International Linear Collider Steering Committee and Global Design Efforts to the new Linear Collider Board and Linear Collider Collaboration that will coordinate the next phase of the global R&D towards a high-energy electron-positron collider to complement the LHC. GDE Director Barry Barish and LCC Director Lyn Evans share their vision in a joint Director’s Corner. Category: Director's Corner | Tagged: , , , ,

TDR review season is underway

| 7 February 2013 The draft of the ILC Technical Design Report (TDR) was completed last November and submitted for review. On 13 and 14 December, the TDR underwent a technical review at KEK by an augmented ILCSC Program Advisory Committee. The review report endorses the technical design we have presented and recommends “no changes in the TDR.” The report does identify areas and items to address in the future. 2013: The year of the snake or the “What if?”

| 24 January 2013 Ewan Paterson, member of the Global Design Effort Executive Committee, weighs the options that new year, new collaboration and TechnicalDesign Report bring. Will 2013 be the year of the "What if"? Category: Director's Corner | Tagged: , , ,

Become a signatory of the Detailed Baseline Design report

24 January 2013 We invite you to sign the Detailed Baseline Design (DBD) report of the ILC detectors, which now exists as a nearly final draft. It summarises the R&D achievements of the ILC Letter-of-Intent period. The contents reflect the many contributions of very many collaborators. While this draft is undergoing minor revision following the recent review by the International Detector Advisory Group (IDAG) and the ILC Project Advisory Committee, it is almost in the final form. A list of signatories will be included in the report. We wish to include those who contributed already in any way or who wish to join the activity in the next stage. We also would like to include names of anyone who supports advancing further the world ILC effort. Category: Feature | Tagged: ,

Happy New Year! Reflections on 2012

| 10 January 2013 Last year was an especially exciting year for particle physics with the discovery of a 126-GeV particle that appears to be the long-sought Higgs boson. This event is likely to be the most important discovery in decades: the observation of a new kind of particle that signals the mechanism for creating mass in the universe. These impressive early results already point to future directions for the LHC, and more broadly for particle physics. In fact, closer to home, this discovery is providing strong motivation for a Japanese initiative for a staged approach to the ILC, beginning with a ~250 GeV Higgs factory, with the capability of increasing the energy in the longer term. Of complete DBD drafts, reviews and the future

| 6 December 2012 The draft of the Detailed Baseline Design report (DBD) of ILC physics and detectors is complete and has been submitted to the Project Advisory Committee (PAC) of the ILC Steering Committee (ILCSC) for review. What are the technological milestones that have been achieved? Category: Research Director's Report | Tagged: , , , ,

LCWS12 brings together CLIC and ILC communities

| 1 November 2012 For several years, 2012 has been anticipated as the time when progress in the field of high energy physics would enable us to clarify the priorities for future planning. The interesting LCWS12 workshop at the University of Texas brought together the elements for such planning, if not a plan. There were reports on the discovery of the Higgs-like particle at the LHC and how that might be pursued in a linear collider; there were reports on the future planning processes that are underway in Europe, Japan and the U.S. and there were reports on the progress in developing the ILC Technical Design and CLIC Conceptual Design as well as how a staged approach might be responsive to the LHC discovery. A second snapshot of the evolving TDR draft

| 11 October 2012 The Technical Design Report will be the culmination and final deliverable for the ILC Global Design Effort. The report will be submitted in near final form to the ILC Program Advisory Committee in November for technical review in December at KEK. The drafting of the report has been under way since last spring. The GDE Executive Committee recently performed a critical review of a second snapshot of the evolving TDR draft. An ILC Higgs factory – is it enough?

| 27 September 2012 GDE Project Manager Nick Walker reports from a focused, positive and lively meeting in Cracow and the impact the discussions can have on the ILC. Would a staged approach - starting at 250 GeV to make the ILC a Higgs factory and ramping up to 500 GeV later - make for a cheaper machine? Where are the potential savings, and how long would it take to build an ILC Higgs factory? Category: Director's Corner | Tagged: , , ,

Community spirit helps us achieve our milestones

| 20 September 2012 The two volumes of the Detailed Baseline Design report, which will be published alongside the Technical Design Report, are ready in draft form. They will now be submitted to the physics and detectors’ advisory group IDAG. A lot has been accomplished in the R&D process for the ILC detectors, and it’s thanks to the community’s spirit and determination that we have achieved our milestones. We look forward to taking on the next challenge. Category: Research Director's Report | Tagged: , , , ,
