Making the Tohoku area a welcoming place for the ILC and those who will live there – that is the goal of the newly established Tohoku ILC Project Development Center. It comprises 22 academic and local organisations in the north east of Japan. Atsuto Suzuki, president of the Iwate Prefectural University and former director general of KEK chairs the organisation.

Over the last 15 years, Japanese support for the realisation of the International Linear Collider has grown. People of all stripes —academics, members of industry, artists and everyday science fans—have banded together to voice their support for the building the ILC in Japan. The latest in this wave of support is the formation of a new committee, which recently reported on an impressive set of efforts to promote the ILC, says Andy Lankford, regional representative for the Americas in the International Development Team IDT.

Wish you were in Iwate for last LCWS2016 workshop? Here are some impressions of Iwate, proposed region for the International Linear Collider. More than 320 participants from around the world gathered for one week to discuss the latest R&D developments, the linear collider physics case, detectors and accelerators and project management updates for the linear collider. Scientists were warmly welcomed by an enthusiastic local community of ILC supporters. They were also honoured by the presence and speeches of distinguished guests from the Japanese Federation of Diet Members and Iwate officials. - View slideshow - Lost in Tohoku? Live from Kitakami: the potential future host region of the ILC continues to show strong support for the project. Ichinoseki town ball boasts a new banner and an added I, and the Iwate mascots have also embraced the ILC.

Smashing particles together at high energies is power-consuming business. People around the world are discussing to see if the ILC could be made green in the hope to finally reach complete sustainability. More efficient klystrons and cryocoolers, recovering and recycling heat wastes, embedding renewable energies and storage technologies are some of the main issues. The ILC could bring back high-energy physics to one of its core businesses: energy.

Are you confused yet? Is Kitakami a mountain or a town, a river or a region? What’s “Iwate” and what does it have in common with Sendai? Here’s a glossary to help you understand all those new words and look them up before you go. Oh, and by the way: Kitakami is all of the above and Iwate and Sendai are all in the Tohoku region of Japan…

Drivers stuck in a traffic jam in Ichinoseki city are more likely to wonder about the mysteries of the Universe than about the latest Hollywood movie - at least if they take in the billboards at the side of the road. Japan's Iwate prefecture in the Tohoku region in the north of the country boasts a road sign underlining the region's interest in hosting the ILC.

On 10 July, governors, industrial leaders, and local officials of Japan’s northeastern area got together to attend a general meeting of the Tohoku Advanced Science and Technology Study Group. In the northeastern part of Japan, or Tohoku, activities towards inviting the ILC to the area has been intensified ever since the ILC was positioned as one of the promising means to recover from the disastrous earthquake occurred last year.

As the region around Tohoku University recovers from the March earthquake and regains its footing, scientists there look forward to rejoining ILC research efforts, and the local government highlights the ways recovery could be facilitated by bringing the ILC to Iwate prefecture.
