Japanese diet members focus on ATF2

| 21 March 2013 Twelve members of the Japanese Federation of Diet members to promote the realisation of the ILC visited KEK on 4 and 18 March. They spent the longest time at ATF, KEK's test facility for the linear collider. They also toured KEKB, Belle, and the Photon Factory. Category: Image of the week | Tagged: , ,

TDR review season is underway

| 7 February 2013 The draft of the ILC Technical Design Report (TDR) was completed last November and submitted for review. On 13 and 14 December, the TDR underwent a technical review at KEK by an augmented ILCSC Program Advisory Committee. The review report endorses the technical design we have presented and recommends “no changes in the TDR.” The report does identify areas and items to address in the future. ATF autumn run started: aiming for the beam size required for the ILC

| 25 October 2012 KEK's Accelerator Test facility (ATF) is up again after its summer shutdown. After several improvements to beams size monitors, multi-ole magnets and the organisation structure, the international team is looking forward to squeezing the beam size further and further towards the 37 nanometres required for the ILC. Recovery from March 2011 earthquake at ATF, KEK

| 15 December 2011 Restoration of the Accelerator Test Facility is in its final stage at KEK, Japan, where the ATF2 project, the final focus test beam for ILC, is being conducted with an international collaboration. Category: Director's Corner | Tagged: , , , ,

A scientist’s report on the earthquake and KEK’s accelerator test facility

| 17 March 2011 A huge 9.0-magnitude earthquake descended on us at about 14:46 on 11 March 2011 Japan standard time. The ATF (accelerator test facility) was operating for ATF2 beam-tuning and we were going to have a background study for the interaction point beam size monitor. Category: Feature | Tagged: , , , ,

From KEK Highlights: Never lost in translation

12 August 2010 Every day, KEK welcomes scientists and students from around the world. Some of them come here as collaborators who work on the international projects and programmes using cutting-edge facilities at KEK. Some visit as users who wish to use the beamlines at the Photon Factory to look into the smallest worlds. Many graduate students will write up their hard work here into their thesis. Many of them stay only days or weeks, but some of them stay longer to concentrate on the R&D for months or even years, like Dr. Philip Bambade from LAL in Orsay, France. A young female expert on beam size

| 3 June 2010 In June, a lot of Chinese students graduate from different schools. Sha Bai, a PhD student from the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP), is one of them. “I enjoy my research work very much. I like ATF2, ILC and CLIC a lot,” said Bai, who just received her doctoral degree in June 2010 working on ATF2 (Accelerator Test Facility 2) at KEK in Japan, with the goal to reach 37-nanometre vertical beam size at the interaction point, both in beam optics and experimental work. ATF2 enters the nanometre world

| 29 April 2010 The ATF2 collaboration has recently succeeded to obtain vertical beam size of less than one micrometre and consequently has now entered into the nanometre world in the final focus system. In this corner, I will describe what is AFT2 and how we reached this challenging beam size. -- Toshiaki Tauchi Category: Director's Corner | Tagged: , ,

From SLAC Today: ATF2 Narrows the Focus

14 January 2010 Last month the KEK facility in Japan hosted the ninth Project Meeting for the Accelerator Test Facility 2, or ATF2, and a few SLAC staff traveled overseas to participate. The group reviewed progress made in 2009, plans for 2010, and the possibility of extended studies beyond the primary ATF2 goals in 2011, 2012 and beyond. A total of 44 collaborators, including 28 from outside Japan, discussed the technical progress of the ATF2, which began commissioning in December of 2008. The program also covered the future of the project in the face of some major cuts to science funding bodies by the Japanese government. Category: Around the World | Tagged: , ,

From SLAC today: People: Andrei Seryi

15 October 2009 Since beginning his career in 1986, SLAC senior scientist and project manager for FACET Andrei Seryi has worked at five labs in three countries, with the last 10 years at SLAC. In this decade, Seryi has led international collaborations to design and build linear accelerator experimental facilities, all while continuing his accelerator research and design projects at SLAC.
