CERN Council Open Symposium on the Update of European Strategy for Particle Physics

and | 30 May 2019 Six hundred (600) particle physicists gathered for discussions of the physics case for various options on the future of particle physics. This process to update the European Strategy for Particle Physics is mandated by the CERN Council every 6 or 7 years and this is the third time. In addition to people in Europe, there was a substantial participation from other regions, including the Americas, Asia, and Oceania. Category: Director's Corner | Tagged: , , , ,

A linear collider strategy

| 10 May 2019 The linear collider community met in Lausanne in April. The main points discussed concerning implementation of a linear collider as the next large international accelerator project are summarised in a document ready for download. Category: Director's Corner | Tagged: , , , ,

Coming up: the ECFA Linear Collider Workshop

| 26 May 2016 The ILC’s central region – the bits of accelerator and other technology around the point where particles will collide – will get special attention at the upcoming ECFA Linear Collider Workshop in Santander, Spain. But changes to the design, civil engineering issues and detector topics also feature on the agenda. ILC Director Mike Harrison looks forward to seeing his colleagues face to face, rather than by video. Category: Director's Corner | Tagged: , , , , , , , ,

ECFA meets at DESY

| 31 July 2008 In their meeting a couple of days ago at DESY, ECFA, the European Committee for Future Accelerators, got a complete update on all present and future particle physics activities in Europe. They also discussed the ILC and its potential: “We think it is important to remember that particle physics in Europe is more than the LHC,” says the current ECFA chair Karlheinz Meier from Heidelberg university in Germany. “The community has to plan now, gather facts and lay foundations for future projects, and the ILC is a very good example for this.” Category: Around the World | Tagged: ,

Rolf Heuer’s vision of particle physics in Europe

| 10 July 2008 The future Director-General of CERN Rolf Heuer, currently Research Director at DESY, presented his personal vision of the future of particle physics in Europe at the ILC-ECFA meeting in Warsaw, Poland. Heuer emphasised the exciting times the community is now entering with the LHC start-up. The exploration of our mysterious "Dark Universe" is the main motivation for present and future astronomy and particle physics projects, and with the LHC and its highest collision energy ever, we are on the verge to explore it. After reviewing many possible scenarios and options for the after-LHC phase, Heuer said he hoped that particle physics research will continue with the same momentum for future projects, in particular for a future e+-e- collider. He hopes that the community will make use of these exciting times to establish a sustainable and global partnership between the labs, "of which CERN could be the catalyst." The first meeting of the International Detector Advisory Group to be held in Warsaw

| 15 May 2008 During the ECFA workshop for the International Linear Collider in Warsaw from 9 to 12 June, the International Detector Advisory Group (IDAG) will meet for the first time. The three concept groups of the ILC detector which expressed their interest to prepare letters of intent (LOI) will meet IDAG. Category: Research Director's Report | Tagged: , , ,

Role of ECFA ILC Study Meetings

| 1 December 2005 On 14-17 November, the European Committee for Future Accelerators (ECFA) sponsored an ILC workshop in Vienna, Austria. François Richard, chairman of the "Organizing Committee ECFA Study of Physics and Detectors for a Linear Collider" and GDE member, explained the purposes of these workshops.
