Six hundred (600) particle physicists gathered for discussions of the physics case for various options on the future of particle physics. This process to update the European Strategy for Particle Physics is mandated by the CERN Council every 6 or 7 years and this is the third time. In addition to people in Europe, there was a substantial participation from other regions, including the Americas, Asia, and Oceania.

Good news for detector developers in Europe: the AIDA-2020 proposal to the European Commission has been selected to be funded as part of the Horizon 2020 programme. This means that future projects needing state-of-the-art particle detectors like the Large Hadron Collider upgrade and the linear collider will receive a total of ten million euros funding over the next four years. Thirty-eight participants from all across Europe take part in AIDA2020, including CERN as coordinating institute, making it the largest European detector R&D project.

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) held a “Special Linear Collider Event” as part of their 2012 Nuclear Science Symposium and Medical Imaging Conference at Anaheim, California. The special event, held on 29 and 30 October, came on the heels of the discovery of a Higgs-like particle at the LHC at CERN this summer and included an array of leaders in the field. There were presentations on the International Linear Collider (ILC) and Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) accelerators as well as detector concepts, the potential impact of the LC technologies for industrial applications and a forum discussion about future LC perspectives.

ICFA announced yesterday that Lyn Evans will become the new Linear Collider Director, when the Global Design Effort (GDE) completes the ILC Technical Design Report and thereby its mandate next year. This is very welcome news! Not only is Lyn a superb and exceptionally well-qualified candidate for the job, but his early appointment will give us the opportunity to make a smooth transition.

The International Committee on Future Accelerators (ICFA) has now taken the next significant step towards unification of the ILC Global Design Effort and the Compact Linear Collider organisation. It has appointed CERN's Lyn Evans to be the overall leader for the combined linear collider programmes. ICFA chair Pier Oddone comments.

The international effort to design the world’s next major particle collider has a new leader. On 20 May 2012, the International Committee for Future Accelerators announced the appointment of CERN's Lyn Evans as the new Linear Collider Director. Evans is the first to hold the new position, which will lead the Linear Collider organisation created to bring two existing large-scale linear collider programmes under one governance. He will be based at CERN.
