Tunnel vision

| 13 June 2013 During the ECFA LC2013 workshop that took place a the end of May at DESY in Hamburg, the LC management, civil engineering and machine-detector interface experts visited the tunnel of the future European X-Ray Free-Electron Laser XFEL - a week before construction was officially finished. DESY and the European XFEL celebrated the completion of the construction work with a ceremony, atmospheric lights and music in the new tunnel. Watch the slideshow. The fruits of industry

| 11 August 2011 The R&D of industry is as vital to the ILC project as research performed in the laboratory. The Global Design Effort has formed close relationships with multiple industry vendors, fostering innovation and reducing costs. Category: Feature | Tagged: , ,

Preparing for SCRF industrialisation

| 3 March 2011 Developing a realistic plan for cost-effective production of the large number of ILC superconducting cavities and cryomodules is perhaps our most challenging task in preparing for the Technical Design Report. A new round of visits to industry is aimed at informing that effort. Category: Uncategorized | Tagged: , , ,

Keeping up with ILC technical progress

| 3 September 2009 Today, I want to advertise another useful resource that provides detailed ILC technical developments: the monthly Project Managers' Report Category: Director's Corner | Tagged: , ,

Project Managers’ World Tour

| 25 October 2007 I am currently waiting to get on a plane to fly to the Fermilab Global Design Effort meeting, where we will finally say goodbye to the Reference Design phase, and formally begin the new Engineering Design (ED) phase for the ILC. Category: Director's Corner | Tagged: ,

Kicking off a new phase

| 20 September 2007 Since their appointment in May, the three Global Design Effort Project Managers have been busy scheduling and planning the Engineering Design Report kick-off meetings. Since mid-August they have been touring the world for these meetings. Their purpose is, of course, to kick-start the engineering design phase of the International Linear Collider. During one of these recent meetings, from 10-14 September, the members of the ILC community gathered at KEK to discuss conventional facilities and siting, cryomodules and cryogenics. | 19 July 2007 The new GDE Project Managers met face to face with the GDE Executive Committee (EC) for the first time in Rome on 9 and 10 July. Category: Director's Corner | Tagged: , , ,

Akira Yamamoto – A man of calm and expressions

| 12 July 2007 Newly appointed as one of three ILC project managers, Akira Yamamoto is a scientist working at KEK specialising in superconducting magnet development. Category: Director's Corner | Tagged: , , ,

Troika proposed to manage ILC engineering design

| 24 May 2007 There are just too many separate tasks involved for a single manager to oversee the effort and therefore we are proposing to literally borrow the famous Russian symbolism of a "Troika," and create a Project Office consisting of three project managers: Marc Ross (Fermilab), Nick Walker (DESY) and Akira Yamamoto (KEK). This team will have both shared and separate responsibilities, and Marc Ross will serve as the initial chair of the group. Category: Director's Corner | Tagged: , ,
