CLICing into action

| 5 February 2015 The first prototype module of CLIC is operational in the CLIC test facility. The Compact Linear Collider Study shows that it does what it says in the acronym: a compact accelerator module, fed by high-power waveguides, cables and cooling tubes, sits elegantly on a custom-made mechanical structure that can be moved in all directions to ultra-high precision, and tests how all the little details work that turn a metal structure into a functioning accelerator module– frequency, losses, damping, acceleration, deceleration. At the CLIC test facility you see none of the heavy-duty steel pipes that characterise the dipole magnets of the LHC. Category: Around the World | Tagged: , ,

Say “CLIC”!

5 February 2015 The CLIC annual workshop, held at CERN from 26 to 30 January, did not only bring together nearly accelerator and detector experts to discuss the next stages of the project – it also featured a session on possible applications from CLIC technology, which drew experts from other fields such as light sources, medical research and industry. See the workshop webpage for slides and more information. Category: Image of the week | Tagged: , , , ,

A successful Linear Collider workshop in Belgrade – and planning the main LC workshops in 2015

| 26 November 2014 After a successful linear collider workshop last month, which saw progress in site-specific studies for the ILC and detector optimisation for both ILC and CLIC detectors (and more), Steinar Stapnes is looking ahead to next year's workshops in Japan and Canada. CERN-KEK offices established

26 November 2014 CERN and the Japanese high-energy accelerator research laboratory KEK have a long history of collaboration. An agreement signed at KEK on 21 November puts this on even firmer ground: both labs will establish CERN-KEK offices to increase the collaborative effort on accelerator R&D and construction projects of mutual interest. The 2014 ICFA seminar in Beijing

| 13 November 2014 The recent ICFA seminar addressed many topics and chartered the future physics landscape to fine and, if in the further future, less fine detail, says Harry Weerts, Americas Regional Director for the Linear Collider Collaboration. But he thinks one important thing is lacking: a mechanism on how to achieve consensus on what constitutes the global programme for particle physics in the future. Calorimeters enjoy beam time

| 16 October 2014 Test beam season has started again. Two potential prototypes for future ILC detectors are being tested in a beamline at CERN that delivers hadrons from the proton synchrotron, CERN’s workhorse accelerator. The CALICE collaboration is looking forward to getting its hands on the fresh test beam data. Category: Around the World | Tagged: , , , , ,

Linear Collider School switches lakes

| 21 August 2014 The Linear Collider school, a week of intense lectures and discussions on all things linear, has just taken place at lake Chiemsee in Germany, switching from its former venue in the UK’s Lake District to Bavaria. Brian Foster, European Director in the Linear Collider Collaboration, was one of the lecturers and reports about exotic PhDs and linear collider news from a monastic setting. Challenges and goals for the LCWS14 in Belgrade 6-10 October

| 3 July 2014 Summer conferences are only just starting, but Steinar Stapnes, director for CLIC in the LCC, looks ahead to the linear collider autumn conference and its specific challenges for ILC as well as for CLIC. Category: Director's Corner | Tagged: , , , ,

From UK News from CERN: Speaking up for CLIC

| 1 May 2014 The CLIC accelerator collaboration has elected a new spokesperson. Phil Burrows of the University of Oxford succeeds Roberto Corsini of CERN. Over the next three years, Burrows will be engaging with the institutes that are members of CLIC and helping to ensure that CLIC’s R&D programme pushes ahead during the critical phase ahead of the next update of the European strategy for particle physics. Corsini will continue his technical leadership of CLIC/CTF3. Category: Around the World | Tagged: , , , , ,

Newly formed European linear collider forum to increase communication with the project board

| 3 April 2014 The Linear Collider Board is the main decision body to promote and oversee the linear collider and its detectors as a worldwide collaborative project. In Europe, a new body, the European Linear Collider Forum, has just been launched to channel European discussions concerning the ILC and CLIC and to facilitate input for the international Linear Collider Board. Anyone interested to participate is invited to register to the mailing list. Will you take part? Category: Around the World | Tagged: , , ,
