Wish you were in Iwate for last LCWS2016 workshop? Here are some impressions of Iwate, proposed region for the International Linear Collider. More than 320 participants from around the world gathered for one week to discuss the latest R&D developments, the linear collider physics case, detectors and accelerators and project management updates for the linear collider. Scientists were warmly welcomed by an enthusiastic local community of ILC supporters. They were also honoured by the presence and speeches of distinguished guests from the Japanese Federation of Diet Members and Iwate officials. - View slideshow - Lost in Tohoku? In northern Japan, Iwate prefecture is full of cultural and natural attractions and – even more important – very ILC friendly. Local governments support the ILC with enthusiasm and the local population is quite knowledgeable about the ILC, from children to grandparents. Attendants of the next LCWS2016 workshop will have the opportunity to see it by themselves while in Morioka next December.

Amanda Wayama | 22 January 2015
Things are moving forward in the year 2015 – technical planning for the ILC is proceeding, and the Japanese national government is preparing to make a decision whether or not to host the project. But what about Iwate, the region home to the Kitakami candidate site? What are their plans for 2015? Masataka Miya, director of ILC Promotion for Iwate, talks to Amanda Wayama, International Communications Officer for the Iwate Prefectural Government, about Iwate’s strategy for the next year.

For the ILC, 2014 was a year of progress in many areas, but the most important activities were centred in Japan, where Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology has started deliberations to evaluate the physics justification as well as the scope and cost of the project. The past year also featured nice results from the ATF2 facility in Japan and the XFEL in Europe. Mike Harrison, associate director for the International Linear Collider in the Linear Collider Collaboration, didn’t avoid the temptation to look back before looking ahead to 2015.

A working accelerator and detectors that take accurate data are great – but there’s more to life than that. If the ILC goes to Japan, it will attract scientists from around the world, who will be moving with their partners and families who will need houses, schools, jobs and paperwork. In a symposium held at Oshu city hall, local representatives discussed with potential future residents what it takes to make the ideal ILC town.

Sushi, anime, manga, Hello Kitty, and Harajuku fashion…Many aspects of Japanese culture are setting to tone of cool and trendy around the world. Japan’s Iwate prefecture released videos entitled “Cool Kitakami” on 8 April. Composed of four themes – Tourism and Culture, Life, Future and International Linear Collider, these videos introduce how cool it will be to live around the expected site for the ILC to a non-Japanese audience. Don't miss them!

Having just returned from a three-day meeting of civil engineers, accelerator designers, integration experts and linear collider management at the University of Tokyo, Mike Harrison, ILC Director in the Linear Collider Collaboration, reports on the progress. It turned out that even if the ILC is built in stages, which is a popular model with many, all the major civil engineering facilities would have to be completed in phase one of the project.

Our mission was clear: we were the tasters, the vanguard. In early February, the two European LC communicators travelled to Japan for three days to a. find our way around the Japanese transport system, b. be filmed doing so, c. find entry points of improvement potential for foreigners about to make the same experience, and d. start a communication model for the future multi-national laboratory. Here is how it all played out.
